Loud tapping, clattering, squeaking noise from transmission
got me a problem...
there is a loud tapping or squeaking noise coming from my transmission around the driver side. both these noises do NOT happen at the same time...it's either loud tapping or squeaking (sounds like belt noise).
here are some "facts":
- these noises do NOT occur if i push in the clutch pedal
- these noises do NOT occur 100% all the time...sometimes there is no noise at all
- only occurs during IDLE
- i've installed a ZPI flywheel and ACT 6 puck clutch kit (unsprung)
- TRD LSD installed
everything was fine after the installs...then i'd say about a month or 2 later, the noises started up.
i'm assuming it's the flywheel / clutch, but i wanted to see what some think before i took apart the transmission and go looking for what is wrong.
any help or knowledge about this would be greatly appreciated!!

i think this is what they call "clatter" which is a common occurance after installing a light weight flywheel. but then again, i've never found a definitive answer or sound clip about what clatter is.
hey thanks for the reply draxcaliber.
i did some quick searching online about lightweight flywheel and clatter/chatter and it seems like it's a common occurrence.
does anybody else with a lightweight flywheel experience clatter/chatter noises during idle?
maybe it's a combination of a lightweight flywheel and 6 puck clutch...?????

I have a six puck clutch but stock flywheel and under de-celeration I get a noise similar to a bad throw out bearing but it's been that way since it was installed. Are you sure it's not your throw out bearing?
funny, i have had a very similar "clutch chatter/rattle" for a long time now....seems to be the exact opposite of yours though:
-Mine chatter happens only when i depress the clutch pedal. It sounds like its the flywheel spinning and scraping against something. When I rev in neutral with the clutch pedal all the way down, i hear/feel a raspy/chatter sound right at the beginning of the rev.
could it be that your clutch is the opposite type of mine (stock). ie. if my clutch (forget what the stock style is) is a pull-type, and something is causing that noise, whether it be throw out bearing, pressure plate, etc... but then when you depress the pedal, maybe your new clutch is a push-type or something. idk.
all i know is that the sound is very loud and annoying and sounds like something is scraping/grinding = aka. not good.
i've been quoted by Conicelli Toyo Springfield about 1 grand just to drop the trans and diagnose the issue. Then i would have to pay to replace any non-warrantied parts after that.
hey tuff cookie, i'm curious to see if we have the same noise/issues. I'm right outside philly in delco, and work in montco. Let me know if you wanna meet up to compare. Maybe a South Philly Sunday Scion meet sometime.....

sepatc, that's a great idea. we should try to meet at one of the upcoming South Philly Sunday Scion meets or schedule a time and place.
weekends are the only time i have at the moment since my company has me working out in Harrisburg, PA during the week.

whoa i remember this thread.
my problem was that it was the 6 puck clutch. i assume anyway since my brand new clutch gave out after 7,500 or so miles.
here's the thread w/ pics:
