Im just curious has anyone else's MAF sensor gone bad? I have had my tc for almost 2 years and all of a suddon my MAF sensor went yesterday. I dont think that should happen to a car so new.

 

I have never heard of it going so quickly.

I am sure it has something to do with your intake. The maybe you use an oil filter with your intake and the oils got on the MAF sensor. That is very possible. Did you reoil recently? Solution there - don't use an oil filter (aem dryflow filters).

Maybe it got dirty from a poor filtering job?

 

Yep, short ram intake with any type of oiled filter can cause your MAF to go haywire. Also, if you built any type of short ram yourself or bought a "universal" kit then you can have issues with codes relating to the MAF if the filter is too close to the maf.

However, are you sure it is bad? What led you to think the sensor was bad?

 

hmm I did oil it about a month ago. and after I replaced the sensor I just re oiled it again. I have a short ram intake on there.

 

get rid of the oil filter. I just don't get why people still use them...get it off the car and keep it away from the car. Here:

Use a non-oil filter...it just makes more sense...it costs the same, filters better, and as it says on the box "why should you dirty a filter with oil to clean it?" (quote more or less accurate)

 

well had I known about this a long time ago I would have gone that route. I have never heard about these filters. Unfortunately I havent got the money now to buy one after replacing the maf sensor, so it will be a while b4 I can upgrade.

 

i understand, unfortunately that means you might go through another MAF sensor. can you afford another one of those?

If you can't afford the filter now, I would go back to stock until ya can.

that hurts. But it is cheaper to go out now and buy the filter rather than waiting for the next maf to die and have to replace that when it does. I know it sucks, but it is the expense and responsibility of owning a car to take care of it. You have to know going in that when modding, you need to be able to protect yourself if anything goes wrong. okay, enough lecture, sorry...do what you gotta do.

 

You can try to clean the MAF with some CRC MAF cleaner if it happens again, but still try to get a dry filter soon.

 

Once again - how did you determine the MAF was bad? Assume it started with a CEL. What was the code if you recall?

 

well if judging by the last time this happened it took like a month and a half to do something to the sensor I will have more than enough time to replace it. I know that things occur with cars and you need to be prepared however sometimes things happen in life as well that you are unprepared for. I just recently got hit with a hospital bill and many doctors bills so now I am financially cripaled. I am trying to recouperate from this but it is difficult.

Should be able to get it at a local auto parts store for around $6. Just take off your filter, give the MAF a good squirting - not too much, and let air dry.

If it's just gunked up from oil this should clean it up & you won't need a new MAF.

 

Another possibility, although I would not do this until last resort if killing MAFs was an issue, just rewash the oiled airfilter to get the oil off, dry it, and put it back on. Won't be catching a lot of dust but won't be sucking oil through the MAF either.
