Default No Gears After Accident

Alright little back story. So the other night I got into an accident after I fell asleep behind the wheel :/ Nobody was hurt (hit a parked car) and I'm completely fine so anyone who cares, knows lol I hit the drivers rear of the other car with my passenger front.. bent the frame near the headlight and the wheel got shoved back about a foot or so, ripping the axle assembly out of the transmission, knee and wheel airbags deployed, and all that fun stuff.

Today is the first day I've gotten a chance to really take a look at the car and I'm having a bit of an issue. She starts, idles, and revs 100% fine, but when I step on the brake and shift into any gear (I'm auto), it doesn't do anything. It's as if the car is permanently in neutral. The shifter lever moves but the engine doesn't get any load from the trans.. I've tried to look it up with no answers and my question is, does the transmission on the tc go into a type of safe mode in an accident or when the airbags are deployed, locking it out of gear or did the axle getting ripped out mess the trans up? I have no idea whats wrong and there's nothing visible that would tell me whats happening soo if anyone's had this problem before or could help me out it would be greatly appreciated!

well considering your lf hit the other car jammed back tire and ripped out the axle. Your car isnt going to go anywhere untill the lf axle gets pushed back in.

If anyone is wondering why I tried putting it in gear, I was trying to get on ramps so I could jack it up, I didn't care if I dragged that entire side of the car on the ground it's gotta be fixed anyway lol

But anyway, I'm pretty sure the drivers side, is the drive side, so the motor should still get a load from the trans going into a gear.. unless I'm wrong and the passenger side is the drive side?

The transmission fluid probably poured out of the axle socket. There is no fluid in the torque converter so it cannot operate. Also, there isn't anything lubricating the trans so running it is very bad.

Good to know, thanks! As soon as it didn't do anything I shut it off so I guess that's whats going on. If anybody else has something to add or things I should look out for with that whole suspension being smashed and the airbags I'd appreciate it..

Auto requires hydraulic pressure to function. If the axle came out, so did your ATF. No fluid = no pressure. Just hope at this point you didnt toast the tranny.

well, the car got towed today to get the frame pulled and my guy said he'd look at it so ill see what happens. i have a small amount of trans fluid reading on the dip stick but there were never any puddles of fluid either at the accident or at my house so i have no idea where it all went lol

In that case the axle did not come out of the transmission. The drive shaft must have separated at a CV joint. It would make sense that there is no load because the rest of the shaft is just spinning freely. Your trans should be fine but you should check the axle seal for leaks.
