Default Noise under my hood driving me nuts, help me find what it is

Ok, here is the problem, I have a squeeking noise somewhere from under the hood and I cant find where it is comeing from exactly. It sounds as though it is coming from the side of the engine where the pulleys are, but I'm not 100% sure. Here is what I know for sure....

1. Its not from my suspension.
2. The squeek is present when my car is in any gear. That includes 1,2,3,D,or reverse.
3. The squeek goes away as soon as i put the car into either neutral or park.

I dont know a hell of a lot about cars, but I know some guys on here do, so im wishing someone can help me out. What could cause the squeek under these conditions?

Thanks,

John

Oh no, I hope not a tensioner. I traded an 01 Celica for my Box. The Celica had a design flaw on its tensioner. They redesigned it but did not recall it. After several new serpentine belts and $300+ for a tensioner and labor I still had the squeakiest car on the road. Very comon on those cars, I hope the Scion isn't gonna be the same.

Well I see that you have a K&N cai listed in your sig. I bet that is causing your problems. Check the cai where it is mounted to the car in the engine bay (the bracket that goes from the intake to the mount on the engine mount) My K&N as well as many others has snapped the bracket right there and it causes rattling and vibration. Its discussed a little here towards the end of this thread: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=102486
maybe this is your problem, maybe it isnt, goodluck!

Its not a rattle really, more of a squeeking noise I checked all of the brackets on my intake, and they are all ok, so I'm sure its not from the intake. What I'm trying to figure out is what part of the car starts moving when I put it into gear, because that is the part that is squeeking.

Im hesitant to bringing it into the dealer since I have some engine mods done, and I dont want them to blame them on the noise. Any chance they can blame a squeeky pully or something on my header or intake?

I had some squeeking on my xA, sounding like it came from under the passenger glovebox, and it stopped when I took apart some of the undercarriage, didn't drop it completely, just took the bolts and stuff out. Put everything back together and it didn't make noises anymore! good thing I got the front sway bar or I never woulda figured it out. Good luck with yours, just take it into the dealer anyways, they shouldn't fight ya too much.

Good pic on the K&N, took mine back off for that. Terrible mounting design. Took a month or so to snap off the mounting bracket on the motor mount. I will not put it back on untill I create a new mounting point. I have heard a ton of complaints on this and am very dissapointed in K&N for such a design.. but oh well.

Hey jrv im glad to say that i think i have the answer to your problem... When u installed your CAI, remember you have to use the rubber vibra-mounting strips they sent you with your CAI. The access hole on the side where your intake routes to the bottom of the car. You need to superglue ( at least thats what i did ) the rubber vibra-mounts around that hole so that your CAI doesn't make contact with the chassis of the car, hence causing your squeak! I had the same exact problem, and i noticed the difference right after the tweak. If you don't have the vibramounts anymore, you can always buy a piece of rubber about 2"x2" and superglue that to your actual intake body right where the CAI and the hole meet. I hope this helps! Let me know...

I just found out about the K&N intake thing the hard way. Not the worst way, my mount is still intact, but the engine compartment rattled something fierce. Just tightened up the bolts on that spot, and I look to my right, and the piping is being dug into by the frame of my tC. If it rattled much more, I fear it would have cut a hole in my intake and screwed up the engine. Not sure how long it'll last me, but I cut a piece of rubber from some testtube holders in the lab at work. Got it ghetto rigged inbetween the piping and the frame. Held on by some tape from some packaging I had in the car. I'll have to glue it in place or something. Not sure how long before the frame cuts the rubber in half though... Way less rattling noise though now.
