Default Replacing the engine

Maybe I'll get better response in this section...

I've decided I will be replacing the engine that is kaput (consensus is still the rings went bad from the turbo)
I've been trying to read up on it, and the camry has the same engine, right? is it one-for-one compatible? if so, what years?
I will likely do the work myself and I'm a total inexperienced noob. If the camry isn't exactly the same, I"ll just look into a salvage TC's engine.

Other question, after swapping the engine, do I need to do anything with the ECM?

Awesome thanks. I ended up ordering a refurbed engine last week though. So we'll see how well that swap goes

The engine code is the same but as some race teams discovered in the beginning there are a few differences when it comes to internal components.

I know you already ordered a refurb motor, but did you make sure it's just not a 2AZ refurb. I noticed you had an 08 tC which has different pistons and compression than the 05-06 and Camry 2AZ. I'm not to sure about any differences in the 2AZ heads, but the internals in the 07+ tC's are definitely different than all the other 2AZ.

Sorry wish I would have seen this earlier. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Well.. being in the process this afternoon of changing things over.. so far everything's going on the same way. The place I got the engine from, I don't know what year it was pulled from, but it was listed under a 05-08 2AZFE

Difference isn't external but internal.

05-06 tC has some differences internally vs Camry 2AZ-FE

the newer ones have slightly lower gas mileage though (I get about 27.5 actual average driving it like any other 20 year old drives a modified ricer).
I can personally confirm though that the redesigned 2AZ-FE engine that is in the 08 or 09 (forget what year it was they upped the compression, added oil squirters, and make the intake manifold plastic and more aggressive) is a direct swap for the older 2AZ-FE engines.

Ask me how I know...
lol

Sooooooo.. how do you know?
:3

Today was the last step to getting everything together, and we thought we got everything, but she won't turn over. Starter clicks...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand.. that's it.
So, still working through some stuff here.

edit: I'm going to say the 08 did that, bc my intake is plastic and I"m pretty sure I heard about there being oil squirters in there

Bought my Tc, thought it was overheating because of an air pocket in the cooling system behind the idioticly (Don't care if it isn't a real word) located thermostat, there wasn't any coolant in the oil and no smoke coming out of the exhaust, turned out to be a blown head gasket leaking exhaust into my cooling system.

Also, when we replaced mine it didn't start at first either, but that was just because we didn't have the ground attached... haha. it took quite a bit to get my new engine going, I actually just changed the oil for the first time on it 2 weekends ago. that oil was DIRRRRRTY!!

D:
We were thinking it was a grounding issue too!
But trying to find a good ground, we're wondering if the battery might not be charged enough to turn 'er over, so the battery is hooked up to a charger

Did you do any magic to get yours started? Any tips you might have?

Even with a charger if the battery is bad enough might not work.

My battery was the wrong size and was leaking acid so I couldn't say if that was my culprit (terrible prior owner), could try basically jump starting it?

not sure how **** you are about your oil, but just a suggestion, if this is an engine you got from a yard that has potentially been sitting for awhile, leave out your oil filter and drain plug and dump a couple quarts through just to clean out any gunk that might have settled in the engine. I did that on mine with some cheap supertech 5w30 and actually had results.

Well, the engine was refurbed, and likely to be all dry on the inside, so we took the sparkplugs out to just get fluids moving through it prior to a real start (it just.. didn't turn). Later we'll try jump starting it, that's a good idea.
And the oil was new and just poured in yesterday. Well.. actually all the fluids were just poured in yesterday.

The battery still needs to be able to hold something. Jump staring works when the battery is willing to take some charge. I've had batteries that wouldnt do crap had to change them.

Does the starter click once or is it cycling like normal?

One click and it's done. We pulled it out and tried starting, and it whirred right up.
We tried manually turning the engine, no-go, real stiff, but my buddy says new engines are like that .
