Ok dudes... Here's my dillemma. I totally want to buy the K&N intake.. They are really a proven name.

HOWEVER: I am pretty scared about the hydro lock deal. What about snow too? I live in michigan so the winters can be pretty brutal.

Basically, I want K&N, but feel like I have to go with WR. The K&N, although people say it "Can" be configured as a short ram, does not look like it was designed that way.

input!?!?

the weapon r actually dyno's better than the k&n! Its a short ram also you won't have to worry about it.

If you're scared of hydro lock, get a AEM bypass valve for $35-$45. You'll need the 2.75" and to cut off about an inch off the tubing.

What does everyone think of the WR name? Does anyone think that they can be trusted not to blow my engine up?

given, any intake would kill low end somewhat, and technically cold air would give up more low end than a short ram, but would give better high end than SR....so its all up to y.o.u.
as for me, im still deciding....

I'm new to the whole tuning thing (I owned a Taurus before this) and so I'm a little ignorant as to what the different terms mean and what not. So if you guys could help, that would be great. First off, what is "hydro lock" and is it really something to worry about. If it is, is there anyway to defend against it. Also, I've heard about the check engine light coming on in different circumstances. Will this happen with the K&N CAI? How would you fix that? Also, my main concern would be voiding my warranty. Will adding a CAI void my warranty? This question should preferably be answered by a dealer or owner with experience taking in their car after adding this. Am I going to have to take it off and put on the stock box every time I need to take it in for service? Thank you for your time and responses.

Hydrolock is when your intake sucks in water, essentially ruining the engine. I've heard that its pretty much a complete myth as long as your car isnt submerged, but I am still paranoid.

For K&N intake owners: where did you buy yours? I also am hesitant to throw my credit card info into any generic website.

Still trying to decide between K & N / weapon R. K&N does not appear that it is designed to be short rammed.

According to Scion, it 'could' void parts of your warranty. I.E. if you had engine problems. However, wouldnt effect like your AC or your sunroof, etc.

FYI: found this on K&N's website.

"16. Will the use of a K&N filter void my factory warranty?

It is against the law for a manufacturer to require the use of a specific brand of air filter unless it provides a replacement air filter, free of charge, under the terms of the warranty. For a more thorough discussion of this law known as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty, see our Vehicle Warranty Section of our Air Filter Facts page. Also see our Letter Regarding Vehicle Warranty and K&N Replacement Filters."

I thought about going ahead with the K&N for better top end speed. I live in FL and it gets hot, so that is why I am leaning toward the K&N Typhoon Cool Air Intake.

However, every scion auto parts website that I have contacted, is completely sold out of the K&N.

Any updates?

okay.. for those contemplating the K&N.. it comes with a Drycharger that protects water from entry.. it's just a sleeve that goes around the filter... so unless your car is underwater.. i doubt hydrolocking's gonna be an issue..

second, i looked at the K&N and though it looks like it can be configured as a SR.. it might require you to by another filter though as the one it comes with seems to be too large to fit.. i never really tested it out myself..

and last, i didn't get any problems with a CEL or anything.. so unless you totally messed up your installation in some ungodly way.. i don't see it happening.

i have it and love it.

It's a foam insert thats inserted somewhere between the filter and the MAF. So that if your filter end is submerged in water, the negative pressure of the suction can be relieved by air coming in from the bypass valve, this prevents water from getting sucked into the engine like a straw, resulting in a hydrolock

i have the weapon r and added the ram air kit. i love it-it sounds awesome, you can feel the pull when the rpms are up and it looks good. plus, it's much easier to install-i dunno if that makes a diff to you. also, take a look at this page. it's from weapon r showing the air flow diff between their filter and the k&n.
http://www.weapon-r.com/store/agora....&ppinc=search2

weapon r will also be making either the cold air box or a heat shield for the filter at some point soon supposedly.
