still..why in the hell would you EVER considering jacking it up from the oil pan?

can't you rent an engine hoist (or cherry picker or whatever it's called?) and lift it using that?

some of you guys crack me up, sounds like you've never worked on a car at all and are giving others advice. lol.
and the rest of you need to learn to read the entire post carefully before you make comments.

OP, its fine to lift the engine by the pan, but just like you mentioned, use a 2x4 and lift it just enough to get the bolt out. GL.

Honestly Reading >>>>>> Than you. Read the whole thing before you jump on someones neck about something. As long as there is less pressure on the pan because the engine is unbolted and able to move it shouldnt be too much of a prob. Ive looked at the pan and it looks pretty thick actually. Have you ever unbolted the engine to see how it moves? Ive seen it, you able to shake it all over the place because it is light, my buddy was able to hit the firewall and radiator, when he shook the engine back and forth without any support, after he unbolted the pass mount, and the front mount.

what about the pressure on the oil pan gasket? it uses a certain lft lbs torque for a reason.

Irrelevant because your distributing the load using a piece of wood. And the torque is on the bolts not the gasket. Because the bolts only affect a small area of the gasket, this can create an uneven mating surface with the block, thus causing leaks. And if none of this could possibly be true, please consult the Factory manual which looks like it uses the pan to lift the engine. I mean they prolly dont know what they are doing either. https://www.scionlife.com/tech/manual.../tc05_1436.gif
