Default Throttle Body Changeout

Hello All, New to the forum. I have an early edition '06 TC with a bad TB. I understand that to replace one the computer has to 'learn' the new unit. Correct? How does this occur/happen? Is this a dealer only process or can it be done in my home garage?

TIA,

Lennecke

Since it's an electric motor that drives our throttle body, you would have already disconnected the battery before working on it. Just as a precaution. And since you've done that, the computer will automatically "re-initialize" all the components in the engine and then learn. What you could do is turn the car to the on position without starting it, slowly push the gas pedal all the way to the floor and then slowly release. The computer should see the limits of the new throttle body and learn.

But I dont believe you'd need anything from the dealer, I've never heard of them doing anything special, and there isn't anything in the service manual about it. It just says to drain the coolant (hoses go in/out of the throttle body) and replace the throttle body, replace the coolant (short version).

so what happened to your early '06? did it throw a check engine light? what were the symptoms that caused you to replace the throttle body? just wondering.. oh and welcome to the forum!

ScionTC - Yeah, got 5 codes! P0121, P2103, P2111, P2112, P2111.

P0121 - Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch ”A” Circuit Range/Performance Problem.
P2103 - Throttle Actuator Control Motor Circuit High.
P2111 - Throttle Actuator Control System – Stuck Open.
P2112 - Throttle Actuator Control System – Stuck Closed.
P2111 - Throttle Actuator Control System – Stuck Open (listed twice).

Car starts OK, but initial idle is about 2K. Comes down to around normal in a minute or so. Can't give any 'real' gas, have to be controlled and steady to drive at all. Can only do about 40 MPH (limp home mode). Some times I have no throttle response at all. Car is an '06 built in 9/05, manual trans, with 38K.

Thanks for the welcome.

When I bought my car I had to swap the motor... old owner found out 17 pounds of boost on stock compression with baseline tune = not good.

The motor I bought was out of a auto of the same year. I didn't swap the throttle body thinking it should be fine. It ended up driving a bit funny, rev matching wasn't smooth. rolling the clutch out was a bit odd. If I held the peddle steady it would fluctuate at lower rpm's. Needless to say I swapped out the throttle body and the driving was a whole lot smoother.

yeah that's definitely the codes for the throttle body. A new throttle body is not cheap, unfortunately. the new throttle body has a port that isn't used anymore, there is a TSB (technical service bulletin) on it. your local dealer should be able to give you a copy. I think they changed a port on it from what I remember reading.

here is the number and description:
SB0012-10 Fuel System - Throttle Body Update

The part number has changed for the throttle body
BODY ASSY, THROTTLE W/MOTOR was part number 22030-28060
Replaced by part: 22030-0H021

price? ouch.. List price $901, trdsparks.com (dealer people buy from on here) $694.17 or you can take a chance on a junkyard part? I just looked up junkyard parts.. $200-300! And who knows if those parts might not have the same issue that you had before. Toyota changed the part number so the part has changed, sounds like they revised it from the earlier part.

hope that helps.

Sorry to bring up a buried thread but I had this exact same problem a couple of days ago. One evening my car threw the P2111 code (throttle actuator stuck on open), and the revs on idle (I have an automatic) were unsteady and the car was vibrating. I drove it to work the next morning and I lost all power on the freeway and had to coast to the shoulder. Had to get it towed to pep boys and they said I had to replace the throttle body...since my car was dead I had no choice but to pay their costs, all told being $1350. I have an '06 with 55,000 miles and have had literally zero problems with the car since I bought it in October 2005. Any idea why this happened and how common it is?

I took the TB apart to see exactly what the problem was - RUST! The stock (to '06 or '07) had a hose that went to the transmission area. I think this was some sort of breather. The new unit I installed (and no, it is NOT A 15 MINUTE JOB - more like 20) no longer supports that hose. I just used a screw to block off the hose going to the trans area and all is well. BTW, I purchased a new unit online for around 750. (well, maybe it was 25 minutes to install, but hey, I'm old....) Lennecke

Can't return at this point. Yes, 750 is a lot, howerver it was new, and of the newer design so I don't think I'll ever be bothered by the rust problem again. Thanks Lennecke
