Throttle Body Cleaning
Since the tC has drive-by-wire (electronic throttle) on the throttle body, is it advisable to move the throttle plate while cleaning the throttle body?
Also, is it just safer to remove the throttle body from the engine to clean it, instead of leaving it on the car? And does the tc have any special "coating" on the plate?
And.. Has anyone looked at the throttle body at 30k miles? Was it that dirty?

there is no reason for you to have to be cleaning your throttle body at 30k miles. I didnt clean mine until 150,000 and it wasnt that dirty at all. Now as far as when your cleaning it, obviously the best way to get it squeaky clean is to take it off and clean it, but that's time consuming and unnecessary. ESPECIALLY at 30k. My advice to you if you still want to do it, is to turn the ignition to the ON position, have someone put their foot on the gas pedal, and spray the cleaner on a cloth. Dont spray that ish on the throttle body because I had some leak down into the engine when I did mine and it threw a CEL. I had to disconnect the battery to clear the code. But trust me you shouldnt have to worry about your throttle body until well after 100k, especially if you have a CAI
I would say at least take a look at it. Just because his wasnt cleaned til 150k doesnt mean it couldnt use it. But our do have a coating on it. I am not sure what the safe to use solvent is when it comes to cleaning it because of the coating. You will have to search for that. I know the info is there. i have read it before but not recently.
is that a reason why you need to clean the throttle body or you just want too...unless there something wrong thats linked to the throttle body being dirty really no reason too like jamarr911 said
our throttle body has a coating on it which helps prevent build up of dirt....i always thought that throttle body cleaning is kind pointless anyways unless u take the intake manifold out and clean it out aswell(gas method)
^^ thanks to all, I will take the air hose off the throttle body and take a look at the throttle plate to see what condition it's in (dirty or clean). And I had a feeling it had a coating on it, but couldn't find any info in the service manual about that. CRC says they make a throttle body cleaner that is safe for coated ones, but first I'll just look to see if it's dirty or not. I hope it's clean like jamarr's was, since it'll save me a lot of time!
to cbuqlb34 - yes you do have a point about the intake having to be cleaned as well
the only part of the air intake system that I've had to clean is the MAF sensor not sure why it is getting dirty because I'm using the stock air filter system. I just figured that since that was getting dirty the throttle body might too. The air filter has been replaced every 12-15k miles.

so the MAF's do get dirty, and yet the throttle body doesn't. that's what it sounds like. Almost like the MAF's have a tendency to get dirty... What happened to your MAF at 27k? it died?

I cleaned my throttle body on my old car (98 neon) at like 115k and it was really dirty but I didnt feel any difference or notice any difference in how it ran. I think you would have to clean the intake manifold too like cburgln34 said
every 300 miles my car would start bogging and would hit limp mode...sometimes even advanced my timmimg and i couldnt drive without detonation happening.....i use to just reset the ecu then i got tired and bought a new maf
That's because you don't need to advance it! The car already runs optimal and if it NEEDS advancing or retarding, it does it on its own when it runs.
