Default trouble going into reverse

Hey i was just wondering if ny of you have trouble going into reverse on a 5speed. Sometimes for me it doesnt go into gear. sometimes i have to go to fourth then try it or first and then shift to reverse. Is there something wrong with my trans. this is my first manual so i am not used to this. Any ideas? thanks

That is pretty normal. No need to worry.

Well, does it do it when you are in your driveway not moving or what?
When I first got mine (first manuel) I used to try and put it in reverse while still rolling forward (not knowing any better since the clutch was engaged) and it would grind. Basically if you try to put it in reverse while rolling forward, it will be hard or grind. If you are jsut sitting still and it's hard, try redline trans fluid, it as worked wanders for any ppl here.

If that doesn't help, bring it back to the dealer you got it from.

how old is your tc? you should ease the clutch off when driving for a smoother ride. 1st gear is really short, so if you rev up to 4-5000 rpm, 2nd gear may jerk, so try going to 3rd gear if you rev that high from 1st. Yea you may feel a lil underpowered around 1-2000 rpms, but think about automatics: theyre rev range is usually around 1-2500 rpm on flat roads if your stepping on the gas liberally, so you barely feel the gears change.

hope that helps

it is normal. even the owners manual tells you that if you can't get into reverse, go back to neutral and clutch in and out again, and try again.

reverse is a square cut gear with no synchronizers, so if you try to engage it while moving, forward or backwards, it will grind.

to make engagement easier, go into another gear, mainly 1st because it has 3 synchros, to help align the transmission and reverse should be very easy. alot of people seem to use 4th gear just fine.
