intake + exhaust vs just intake.

ours is constantly variable though vs the set changeover point on the vtec system

VTAK is great! Every1 loves VTAK. j/k j/k. They work a bit different really. Some would say that comparing i-vtec and vvtl-i is a better comparison, but i think that each serves its purpose rather well.

There are versions of VVT-i that do intake & exhaust. Just not ours. :D

What about dual vvti? Anyone heard of this? I think the new corolla is supposed to have it? Or was that another car?

dual vvti is one step away from basically being vtec. dual vvti controls intake and exhaust, while normal vvti just does intake, as it was stated before.

VVT-IL is what is similar to VTECH. Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence is different to Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence Lift. VVT-IL is the one that is like Vtech. That is what they have in Celica's. Basically the same motor as ours but has that extra valve that opens at certain RPMs.


"Performance is brilliant. The "L" in VVTiL stands for Lift and when you hit 6000 revs you really feel it kick you in the back. Knocks the spots off of the new Peugeot 206 GTi 180 but not quite a Honda Civic Type-R."

Huh? Neither opens an "extra valve", neither intake nor exhaust. VTEC uses different cam lobes (on same cams) to open the valves further than the lower rpm lobes do.

yuup! 2 sets of cam profiles. One for econo mode, one for VTEC mode which has more lift and more agressive timing.
There are many form of VTEC. Not mentioned often is VTEC-E..... which is a more similar to VVT-i found in most Toyota vehicles.
Unfortunately, the only cars left in Toyota's stable that has VVTL-i are the Matrix and Corolla XRS. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

+1 - VTEC is better in a street car.

Pure racing motors don't need either, but they never have a need for low-end.

honda knew what people were gonna do to it when they made it that why its made the way it is. but the mitsu 4g63(? evo engine) is propbaly the greatest historicaly. 14yrs and never changed other then tuning and addons.
