Default 2006 TRD S/C tC down...

Ive been supercharged for about 15,000 miles now. It has been modified (10.5 lb pulley, exhaust, methanol, aem f/ic, blah blah blah...). As of 200 miles ago it has been smoking badly and burning significant amounts of Oil... I add about a quart a week. There is a significant loss of power below 4000 RPM, it idles like crap, and my CEL flashes pretty often. Yep...

Best guess for me is that the piston rings are bad and im just blowing by all my oil. Ideas? Suggestions? Input?

Thanks!

Most likely your rings. do a compression test.... then add a smaller amount of oil to each cyl and re-test it. If your compression numbers go up plan on replacing some rings.

Should be going in to the shop next week for a rebuild (Pistons, rods...) hopefully the block is ok, and I can keep the same oil pump.

The blow by also could be caused by the leaky S/C'er, releasing oil into your motor and the motor burning it up.

Test the compression first. Don't waste money on a shop just yet. Its very easy to do.

Like above. Test all 4, then add a little of oil (threw the plug hole) and then test again. compare numbers. Also if you don't hear any sort of piston slap, They shouldn't be too bad.

Oooook,

So here we go. I did a compression test today. results, from the cylinder closest to the belt, going to the drivers side one:

60
165
165
175

When I pulled the plugs, the low compression one was covered in gunk, the electrode was nearly gone, and it was oily. The others showed mostly normal wear. Guess it is time to rebuild

BAM!

That sucks terribly. I would imagine it shouldn't be too bad though. Of course you'd have to pull out that piston to see. If it's a broken ring-land and you don't have much scoring in the cyl walls, you can probably just rehone it and put back in a new stock piston and new rings.

I would definitely fix the S/C though.. that shouldn't be leaking. Better yet, why not get rid of the S/C and get a turbo

Ouch, Did you try putting a little oil on top of the piston to see if that increases it? I also hope you are still not driving it? You might be safe just pulling the one piston and new ring and call it a day. OR its the time to rebuild and upgrade pistons rings crank and so on for high boost.

The next time I drive it will be to the shop. I didnt put any oil in there.. i figured that with it being off by so much, it was a given. Ill wait to see what it looks like once it is torn down, but I am guessing that Ill end up using some of dezod's pistons, maybe a set of stock rods, and putting it back together.

Well the oil on top will help you know if its just a burnt or bad ring or if its a broken rod. It should increase with some oil if its the rings.. most likly stay the same if its the rod.

If it was rods or bearings, you'd be hearing a knocking sound.

The oil is basically a leak down test. If he's losing that much compression, I bet he's leaking oil in that cyl too.

Yeah, he would also be hearing piston slap if its the rings. It is hard to determine between the two sounds as well.

So following up:

That motor was rebuild with forged internals and I replaced the supercharger. A year later, that motor popped with a 10.5 pulley on it. I sold the car for $3500 and got myself a Mazdaspeed 3. The new owner replaced the engine, and I think he turboed it. I see it now and then driving around.

Dang, it must have been really screwed up to blow on just a 10.5lb S/C pulley with a built motor.

That was always the most sad feeling for me seeing someone else drive the car i built.
