My good friend with a subaru STI suffered two teardowns (gaskets, gaskets, gaskets!) for warranty repair on his Precision. Both his original and replacement didn't last more than 5k. I got a sick feeling in my stomach after that because I was a fan and user of the ol' t61.

I'm not flaming on them because horror stories can be told of all turbo companies. I tend to sway to rebuilt turbos because the cartridge has gone through some heat cycling and has already shifted as opposed to new cast iron that may not have been heated yet. If you get extra funds buy an ebay turbo take it apart and see for yourself that a Precision and Ebay don't look much different. I can't say I've taken apart a Garrett for myself because I've always sent mine back for warranty or repair. I have taken various others apart, some for fun others because of fails.

So now your prolly asking yourself "why is he telling me this?" The answer is simple a turbo is a turbo is a turbo. They operate on the same principle as the other turbos before them. What is different is workmanship and materials, that is what you should buy into. Billet is lighter, faster spool, and is expensive because of workmanship and materials. Stainless steel housing also expensive again because of the workmanship and materials. China etc. bearing vs tested proven bearing will always yield results in favor of the workmanship and material.

I don't like asking around much about turbos because you will always have that one guy with doom and gloom fail experiences. Again, look for the workmanship and materials in your products. If you look for this in your turbo you will always get the best deal.....

Building a car for boost is always going to be expensive no matter how you put it.
Well said Dan.

This the key. EMS can do boost vs vss or boost vs gear. Ive set mine up both ways and honestly had better luck using the boost vs vss and using a bit of a ramp rather than jumping from 18-24-28 psi (how my boost by gear was setup)

Havent broke a trans since I went to boost vs vss. The car has only seen a small number or street pulls at 656whp before it blew up. Tearing everything down this weekend, suspecting a melted piston due to too much timing. Originally thought it was fuel but looked back through the data logs and the afr (gas scale) never rose above 12.5:1 which should be fine on e85. On the other hand, the timing at 31 psi was never really squared away like it shouldve been and I think I had too much advance at peak torque. This time a more knowledgeable tuner than myself will be taking care of this

Good news is theyre cheap, although the supply of cheap low mileage E351's tends to be drying up a tad.

That's why you research the successful builds on this forum and you'll find a lot of the answers you're looking for. I advise you take a look at thendawg's thread cause he's pretty much done it all....broke it....done it all again but you'll gain A LOT of knowledge about what works and what doesn't. Don't get me wrong....every car is different but you can get a good baseline from looking at what other people have done successfully.

I completely understand you and i do read alot in all build threads i do know the tranny break but not that aften . Whats the point in building your engine to hold 600-700 hp if you tranny wont be able to even hold 550 reliable it is really making me sad . Is like buying alot of shoes to someone that dont have feet he have them all but cant use them same with the tc lots of power woth build engine but you cant use it cus of the tranny lol

Boost by vss has a lot to do with the concerns you have about the tranny. Bringing the boost in gradually helps transition the power better and less violent from wheel hop and tire spin than just having your boost at its highlest level all the time.

What we all are saying is that IT CAN BE DONE, but you'll need to do some work. For example I'll give you what I've done so far to help combat wheel hop & tire spinning which seems to be a common theme to some of our tranny issues. 1) AEM EMS4, AEM Boost controller....to operate boost by vss 2) Engine Torque damper and all poly motor mounts, 3) LSD in tranny, 4) Coilovers 5) BF Goodrich drag radials on my stock rims and an extra set of 15" rims that will have a pair of MH or Hoosier slicks for the track or whenever I head south to Mexico!

If you've gone through the trouble of collecting parts....why throw all that hard work away because you "think" the tranny can't hold power when people are saying it can be done but its gonna take some effort and research. When people tell me I can't do something that just gives me ammunition to prove them wrong. Prime example....when I started collecting parts for my build an aquantence with an Evo told me I should just sell my tC and buy an Evo cause you can't make a tC fast.....when my tC is done I'm gonna stomp a mudhole in that Evo's a$$!
