Dezod S1 w/ Cat
Hi all! I'm looking to boost my tc pretty soon and have been scouting Dezod's S1 kit for a while now. Just want to keep it simple since it's my DD. Don't want to build a track car or anything, mid 200's for whp would be just fine for me. PM'ed Paul a few times here on SL, and he's been real helpful and informative. I'd def go with this kit cuz of the option for a catted downpipe. I live in NJ, so emissions inspection happens every 2 yrs.
My question is if there have been any problems experienced with the cat substrate burning up and destroying engines? My gf has an '02 Altima and that was a major problem with their cats. In some cases, the car would run rich and cause the substrate to get damaged, leaving pieces to get sucked back into the engine and destroy it. Is anyone currently running the S1 kit with the catted downpipe? Any recorded problems? Thanks guys!

well thats impossible my friend. the cat is part of the exhaust system and nothing in the exhaust goes back in to the engine. i don't know how nissan designs the car but i find that unlikley that is possible. the engine isnt going to provide any suction through the exhaust valves to suck something back in to the engine.
From a nhtsa website, did a search on their recalls:
ALSO ON 2002 ALTIMA AND SENTRA VEHICLES, CERTAIN ENGINE OPERATING CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE THE PRE-CATALYST TO OVERHEAT AND DAMAGE THE CATALYST SUBSTRATE. IF SUBSTRATE PARTICLES ENTER THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, THEY COULD SCORE THE CYLINDER WALLS, RESULTING IN INCREASED OIL CONSUMPTION. IF THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL IS NOT CHECKED ON A PERIODIC BASIS AND DROPS BELOW THE LOW LEVEL, AND THE DRIVER CONTINUES TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE IGNORING NOTICEABLE ENGINE NOISE, ENGINE DAMAGE MAY OCCUR WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. THE PRE-CATALYST WILL BE TESTED TO ENSURE IT IS WORKING PROPERLY AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY. IF DAMAGE IS FOUND INSIDE THE PRE-CATALYST, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE ENGINE.
Like you said, not sure if they design their cat's differently, but I'd assume not. Again, what I was told from several mechanics, as well as Nissan themselves, was that this was mostly due to unburned fuel damaging the substrate (i.e. running rich).

well dezod uses a random tech cat which isnt the same PoS that nissa decided to use 10 years ago. i wouldn't concern myself with 10 year old problems when new tech is out. i have never heard of an engine sucking something back in to the combustion chamber from the exhaust. they probably just used a bad design. the runners on that cat appear to be very short. the cat on the dezod set up is in the down pipe so it would have to get passed the turbo that is already pretty down stream of the head. it's your call though i don't think it's an issue.
