Sounds to me like your coolant system has an air pocket.

no smoke coming from the engine-i just picked up toyota coolant so i added that to the tank, and i'm gonna fill up the radiator when the car cools down a lil bit. i was told that if there was an air pocket in the system, that i should start the car, once it gets warm, open the valve on the drivers side until just coolant comes out. that should force the air out, so i have to do that later also. this whole mess is just making me more and more frustrated. how can a service dept not fill up the radiator or the coolant tank, and not notice the temp gauge going to the end-especially after they did an 8 mile road test? i noticed the temp thing less than 2 miles from the dealership. they not only didn't see it, but they also had no problem giving the car back to me without filling the radiator all the way.
