Removal of the tC head
Well, most of you know the case with my older engine. The damage was pretty epic but I picked up the engine today from my install shop and it LOOKS like I might be able to salvage the head.
However, I have no idea how to REMOVE the head in the first place haha.
Does anyone have a DIY on this? The engine is sitting in my garage right now heh. I am ready to wrench away at it but I don't want to mess anything up. There are numerous holes in the short block on the bottom end but the top looks fine as of now...
I also posted this here because this is possibly the only section I frequent now TT
Anyone have anything on this?

if you have the engine just sittin there just start taking stuff off, all i know for sure is the timing chain cover has to come off in order to get the head off, other than that it should just be some head studs that need takin out.
its on the passenger side, look around for any diy head removal, wont be 100% exact but most heads come off about the same way, thats why i mentioned taking off the timing chain cover, thats something you wont have to do on all cars.
What has to come off is the valve cover, camshaft caps, slip the timing chain off then remove the camshafts there is a timing chain cover that gets removed too. trying to rember i just started to pull stuff off. but one thing i will say is get the proper too to remove the head bolts it is NOT a T50 hex socket like i thought it was. i ended up snaping 3 of the headbolts using the wrong hex key i belive u can order the proper one from toyota. someone correct me if im wrong.

- Remove all accessory belts, pulleys, tensioners and everything else that will prevent you from removing the timing chain cover.
- Remove the the crank pulley (Preferrably using an impact gun, you may or may not need to use a puller to remove the crank pulley, depending on how tight the pulley is wedged on the crank shaft)
- Remove the timing chain cover
- Remove the timing chain tensioner
- IMPORTANT- Remove the bolt holding the top of the timing chain guide to the head. If you do not remove this, you will not be able to pull the head up from the block.
- Remove the timing chain from the two camshafts
- IMPORTANT -Remove the cam caps holding down the camshafts (label or layout the camshaft caps in the exact location and orientation as it resides on the head, the caps must be put back in the exact same location and orientation). You may need to lightly tap the sides of the cam caps with a brass hammer to break them loose if they do not pop up by themselves.
- Remove the camshafts (this will allow you to access the 10 head bolts)
- IMPORTANT- Remove all 10 head bolts (using ONLY a 10mm Bi-Hex Socket, if you try to use a allen head socket, you may strip the head of the bolt since it's torque down pretty tight. Also use a breaker bar on the 10mm Bi-Hex Socket to give you leverage--drilling out a strip head bolt is not fun).
We just dissassemble one first gen 2az-fe and one second gen 2az-fe motor two weeks ago. If you had posted this question sooner, We could have taken a step by step photo for dissassembling the motor.
Here's some pictures of the engine apart (scroll down to the very end of the page): www.myspace.com/ptuning
