the motor can take some abuse but rapid drop or increase in temp on any metal in not good... it will weaken the metal bonds after awhile.. its the same principle as warming up the car before you drive hard..

so, ace, what is the solution? drive to the car wash, sit for 15 min in the bay, wash my engine, sit for another 15 min and then drive home?
my engine bay gets HOT!

 

I dont know yet lol, solution is to get a house and do it on the driveway before driving the car.. what im concerned of spraying water on the hot manifold and turbo, it boils water like crazy.. I guess stock is fine due to the manifold heat shield and it doesnt get hot that hot

 

well, that's how I have done it...park in the street, wait till teh evenning, wash, wait till the next day and pull it in teh garage...but I don't have a power washer at home...

 

u'd have to worry about the alternator and battery though correct? ( i just need to not be lazy n wait for it to cool off an dwipe it all down)

 

I don't know about all this.....

There are FAR too many sensitive connections under the hood of a modern automobile. I would rather spend a week with a Q-tip than a month wondering why my car won't run after spraying it down....

 

^^ Its been done by many without problems, the engine bay can take water.. some even pressure wash it, though not recommended

 

I'll pressure wash my engine after degreasing it. I cover up the negative terminal and my intake filter, though. Haven't had any problems.

 

I have cracked stock cast exhaust mani's before by just going through a large puddle without a splash guard and have cracked the heads on a chevy lumina doing the same thing but with splash guards(big puddle.....lol). I learned to stay away from puddles.........lol

However iv owned a 87 oldmobile cutless and loved to drive as fast as i could through puddles, i even sprayed the ish outa the engine bay with water hose and about 10 cans of foaming engine degreaser, never had a problem with it. but that car also had an all iron head and block. the lumina did not.

 

I'd still be very careful spraying water in an engine bay.....no matter how many times you got away with it without issue.

Just a word of caution.....that's all.

 

I dunno about the block cracking but I can Guarantee if your manifolds is hot it will crack and turbo stuff isn't cheep

 

i just washed my engine day today i fried my alternator cracked my header my block my car wont start and a midget kicked me in the nuts


today was the 100 time i have sprayed out my motor and nothing happened so who knows

I'm glad you've been lucky, but telling people it's okay to do that is like saying running across the highway blindfolded is safe.

 

lucky i am not i know you dont blast straight into a alternator its common sense and a quick mist wont hurt nothing every time you drive through a car wash your hole exhaust system and motor gets sprayed including your radiator does it crack

 

You're supposed to wash your engine with HOT water. i just use the "tire & engine" setting at the car wash. and pop my hood and blast away.

YES, you can spray off a dirty engine/engine bay.....as long as you're VERY careful about it.

 

most car washes have it, its normally a green crap that you can spray using low pressure from the wand. works good on tires, but i could have sworn alot of them have a warning post that says not to spray directly to painted surfaces.........idk i cant remember
