Default Weird problem with my Turbonetics Stg 1 kit

Hey there guys,

Well I was having lots of fun with my turbo and haven't posted all the much lately...

Well I had a crack on the Flex tube that comes off the wastegate... I would have to say it stayed that way for a few weeks.

In the past few days, Dark and reallllly bad smelling exhaust has been coming out of my pipe. Like if it is in my garage with the door open, the room literally fills with smoke in seconds.

I am really worried that something terrible has happened to something internal or to my turbo unit.

Also it seems my car has trouble keeping idle as of today, it seems that it is struggling to stay alive.

Any thoughts?

Need more info.

How many miles? Do you run a turbo timer? If so, For how long? How many miles on the turbo? No white or blue smoke?

Black normally means really really rich as does the smell. Do you have a Boost/Vac gauge? Whats it read at idle. You could very well have a vac leak somewhere. 630cc injectors are pretty big so if your leaking that would explain the smell and black smoke. Call Turbonetics and ask for Steve.

If you had a blown seal in the turbo more then likely it would be white oily smoke. I forgot to ask do you run a wideband? If so, Whats it read at idle?

Hey there,

I have about 5k miles on this turbo so far. The car has 17k miles on it.
I havent had a chance to get my Boost/VAC reading yet, I will get that to you later today, however I do not think that will bring us close to the solution.

The smoke smells really strong of Oil and has a blue tint to it. As It does not seem like there is any engine damage, I feel strongly that maybe there is a blown seal in the turbo.

Last night while under my car, I noticed a small drip of oil coming down my Oil Return from the turbo housing.

There is oil coming out of the downpipe flange that meets up with the turbine housing.

Seems like a lot of oil too

Oily smoke comes out of the exhaust about 30-45 seconds after turning on the car.

On the initial rev up of the engine, smoke is gone for a few seconds and then blue smoke comes out, then when you let off, a big puff of blue smoke comes out.

Seems to me like a seal is blown or some sort of oil leak has occurred in the turbo.

Sounds like the seal on the turbine side may have failed. +1 to yamaha call Steve at Turbonetics and he can get you a new turbo. If you haven't replaced the downpipe yet tell him that as well and he can replace that for you...
