is there an air leak? or is that normal? the subwoofer sounds perfectly fine, no distortion, popping, or anything unusual...

 

check the wiring for burns?

 

ya just make sure you keep an eye on it while its on...my whole trunk caught on fire in my old car when i had 4 12's in there...keep a fire extinguisher in my trunk ever since lol

 

Remember that for the amount of power output you have you need to compensate with larger wiring. small wires cause resistance and therefore cause heat. Heat equals fire and fire BAD!

 

oh, lol, it doesn't smell like burning wood, just wood, but very strong

yeah, my power wires are 4 gauge and i think my speaker wires are either 14 or 16

Is it a sealed box?

 

if its a ported box, its probably just the smell of the wood coming from inside the box. when my friend got his box new it had a wood smell that came from it also. as long as its not a burning smell you will be fine.

 

it's sealed... and the screws around the sub were tightened with a power screwdriver

 

The speaker moves air - the air is trapped inside the speaker box but some of it will get out and then you smell it. Maybe could use some heavier wire on the speaker signals (12-10?) after all that does handle the amp output 500 watts?

 

Most new boxes smell, it should go away after a period of time, don't worry about it.
