Steering Wheel controls CAN WORK by buying one of these : http://www.pac-audio.com/products/pr...el%20Interface I use one for my Kenwood DDX8019 with NAVI, and it's very simple to install and used the Kenwoods "Hardwire Remote" option:

Oh, and for the bypass on the Kenwoods all you have to do is tie the green wire that says "E-Brake" to ground. The GPS antenna comes with the unit, there is a add-on that enables XM radio and live traffic info + weather, that USB add-on antenna costs about $200. If you just want the NAVI there is no additional antenna required...

i agree..coming from avic z1...my kenwood ddx812 with the garmin module blows em all away! Bluetooth is PERFECT! IPOD is unbeatable..its instantaneous!!!! with video!!! NAV is sometimes slower to recalculate than my old z1...but at lease the garmin doesnt drive me to wrong locations. (Once entered address to see NJ nets @ continental arena..and it drove me to a corn field 3 miles away!!) I do miss the z1 in that it doesnt loose its location when the sats are out of range due to the motion wire. and the dual map capabilities (i like to have a far map and a close up map)

but i love the custom poi and updatability of my kenwood....the pioneer z1..pssshh...that update was crap...and pioneer doesnt seem to care....

get the kenwood...you wont be disappointed...

hey how did you guys get the car icon...i only have the arrow??

So I just installed my D3, it is awesome. I have it bypassed so it can play DVD's while I am driving. The only thing I dont like is that the steering wheel controls dont work anymore.

Other than that I would totally recommend getting the pioneer D3

Default installation

question about installation:

first off, i myself would not be able to install it, i don't know anything about cars and wiring, so i don't want to chance messing anything up.

second, i would like to get a bypass for playing dvds while driving and also get that extra module thing installed so i can use the steering wheel controls.

my question: where can i get something like this done? i am just guessing but i don't think taking it to best buy would work, since doing the bypass is probably illegal? would i just find a local shop that sell nav systems and ask them to install it? not sure about this sort of stuff.

thanks

if you get the wireing harness its WAY easier, just match your colors.

the bypass is THE most dangerous mod you can do. I dont care what you say, you WILL glance over to see whats on the screen. if you are going to do it for the nav, still a bad choice. VERY DANGEROUS
Sterring wheel controls are easy to do,just need the right pac adapster. Call crutchfield.[/quote]

best buy will do it for you, they are not as bad as people make em out to be. How would they stay in business? Im not sure about the bypass thing. A local shop will more than likely bypass it but may make you sign a wavier

I had my DNX8120 installed at Best Buy a couple weeks or so ago. The guy said he couldn't do the bypass, but showed me exactly what to do.
Don't worry if the shop doesn't do it for you. It's ridiculously simple. You disconnect the wire going to your handbrake, and just ground it to a screw or the body somewhere.
Turn on a DVD and just touch the wire around to different surfaces till you find a good spot to ground it.

Pic from last summer, Clarion MAX675VD + NAX-970HD nav unit. Man, it was hot.

iPod interface and NAV are both lightning fast. Folder/file changes are instantaneous, and there is no lag time for route computation. About $600 for each unit, purchased separately.

alot of people that work in the install bay for best buy are mecp certified, and if you take a look around thier will be certificates hanging on the wall with the installers name on it. and they will have a mecp patch on thier left arm.
as for the bypass its very simple have them install it then later take it out . find the wire going to the hand brake then extend the wire to the left of the steering wheel. thier will be blank spaces for switchs go to radio shack and pick up a (stock) looking switch. install it in one of the blank spots then ground one side and the other to the wire you ran. not only can you turn the video off if a cop pulls you over, but if its a unit with a process like brake, release, brake. you can just flip the switch as so!!!
