To Bass Boost, or Not to Bass Boost
pretty straightforward, do you use the bass boost circuitry in your amp or not? (i'm not asking for info on bass boost, i'm taking a poll to see if other people feel the same way i do about it)
I don't use it on my subs because they get all distorted when i use it. Although i never tuned the amp correctly and the wiring is all messed up so don't take my word for it.
When JL audio's new subs come out i am going to buy them.

better start saving $$$ now...

well, if your amps not tuned right and have bad wiring, i'd say you'd want to get that taken care of.
let me explain better: i listen to a wide variety of music (ranging from bob dylan and the dead, to nirvana and greenday, sublime and pearl jam, the roots, outkast wu tang TCQ, Rage, bob marley, zeppelin and floyd...basically everything but country and hardcore). as my amp/subs are tuned now (no bass boost), the hip hop/sublime bass notes play hard and loud, while the rock songs are lacking in good bass.
however, if i turn the bass boost on and up, i get rich deep bass on the rock songs, but way overpowering, boomy and distorted bass on the hip hop type songs.
different types of music record bass notes at different levels (obviously hip hop bass notes are at a higher level than rock ones).
Unfortuately, the remote bass boost control didn't work on my amp, otherwise i could just adjust it at my seat, but i'm contemplating retuning the amp with the bass boost set to like 4-8 db's, so i get the bass on rock songs, but then i can turn down the subwoofer level on the HU for rap songs.

I ANSWER questions.
I ANSWER questions.

A lot of rap is meant to have really heavy bass. If it sounds bad on your system, maybe your system needs some help.
For certain songs that have REALLY weak bass (like the Cars Greatest Hits... what a wimpy mix...), I will turn on the bass boast in the iTunes EQ so that my iPod bumps up the bass for me, so don't have to worry about it.
Elemental Designs had a good video on why you shouldn't use bass boost but its no longer on their site. Anyways, from personal experience, using the bass boost always gave me a distorted signal to my subs especially at high volumes.

But for someone who has their gain set on say... 40% and wants a punchier sound and already has the HU settings with a lot of bass, then the gain **** should be adjusted before the boost settings
Never use bass boost. I tuned my amp (JL 500/1) using a downloaded 50 Hz 0 dB gain tone, head unit settings set to 0, volume at 3/4 of maximum (speaker disconnected) and a voltmeter. JL has a tuning procedure that has you increase input sensitivity to 44.7 VAC for an optimal gain setting. I don't touch the "Boost" setting on the Parametric EQ.
I do notice a difference in sounds when playing rock vs. R&B. If I'm using iTunes from the Mac mini I just adjust the iTunes equalizer to the music type. In the rare circumstance I'm playing directly from the head unit, I adjust the subwoofer gain on the head unit to balance the signal.

Maybe he meant something else. On the JL amp, the "Boost" setting will only function with the Low Pass filter on 12 or 24 dB. With it off, boost is disabled to prevent cascading the processing of multiple amplifiers when configured in a master/slave arrangement.
