Okay, so this is the second time I have blown my tweeter in my speakers. Same speaker, everything. I have the memphis mclass sync-16 components. Ok well I had them running off my deck (Eclipse cd3100) and the speaker was just fine. Well last night I went out and bought another amp and decided to amp them up. Well the second I turn my cd player on my left speaker decides to make this zap noise, and the quality of the speaker is horrible now. I'm beginning to think I have a faulty speaker, because this is the SECOND time this has happened. I will be taking it back to the audio place to have him check it out once again. What I notice happens now though is when I turn it up loud the left speaker will pop as if its getting TOO much power, but the right one sounds absolutely fine. Any advice because i'm ____ed off about this entire situation.

I think I found my problem... Something may not be right. Please be easy(little words) as I don't have very much knowledge in car audio (yet). But when the second I hooked up my amp my tweeter blew. Well the other day I was pressing lock on my door and I noticed my speakers make a cracking sound. Possibly metal or something touching? I'm just throwing it out there because I think this might be the problem... if anyone has advice let me know..

 

If the wires touch any metal of the car bad things can happen. So make sure of that. I'm assuming you're using a passive crossover (little box that came with the speakers) so make sure thats all hooked up correctly.

 

I'm assuming. Yeah i have crossovers installed. I'm not sure where to start at though. I was thinking of just popping open my door panels and checking the wires. The crossovers are hooked up correctly. My left speaker will pop when I turn it up loud but the right door speaker doesn't? Would it just be a bad signal being sent to the speaker that's blowing the tweeter? I'm assuming because a wire might be touching metal, this is where the cracking of my speakers come in when I hit the lock button.

 

How high is the volume?

On the headunit, what's the max and what are you turning it up to before you hear the pop?

 

the max is 80... and it's around the 40-60 area.

Oh, sorry I thought you meant when I pressed the lock buttons. Well I tuned my amp, I have my hpf set at 70hz, and when i turn it around 70 (I like music loud but it's not THAT loud) I try to get just a little bit of mid bass out of the speakers but the left one begins to pop, but not the right one. Right now it's at -1 (out of -5 to 5) and I can't turn it up any louder or my speaker starts to distort or pop.

 

head units can clip at 80-90% (bad signal) and can really hurt your speakers. what's the rms rating on the speakers and your amp?

 

50/100 for the speakers (along with the tweeters) and 110 X 2 for the amp.

 

50/100? 50 rms 100 peak? if you really think you can get more juice out of your speakers turn the headunit down to just below where you hear the pop and turn up the gain on your amp very slowly, if you hear anything that doesnt sound right at all turn it down immediately. trust me ull know when it doesnt feel right, ive blown plenty of speakers.

 

Well i'm afraid to turn my gains up anymore than they are now, it's a little above 1/4, and the max I usually turn it up to is around 70, do you think I should retune it with a lower max volume?

id turn it up to where u hear the pop and turn it down 5-10 notches.

 

Well if I turn my gains all the way down and turn the headunit up all the way there is no popping sound.

 

dont turn it all the way down first. turn it till it pops where it is now, turn the hu down then turn the gains up.

 

okay... ill do that. About my speakers cracking when I hit the lock button, where do you think I should start to fix that?
