Design enclouser question
will the shape of the box affect the sound? Like if its real deep, or real shallow and wide? I have a box that would go great with the 10W6v2 airspace wise but the magnet will be about a 1/4in from the back so i dont know if this will be ok. I really like the box, and it was giving to me for free and it leaves me pleanty of space in the back so i would like to use it. Ive even thought of ripping the carpet off and adding an extra piece of MDF to the front to give me an extre 3/4 of an inch in the back. anyways should i just build a new one or will this be ok? Thanks for your input
you could always reverse mount the sub. thats probably what i would do since the box sounds like it doesn't have the proper air volume specs when you factor in Driver Displacement (ie. subtract the volume/mass of the speaker itself from the total interior airspace of the enclosure. those 10w6v2s are BIg butt subs and take up a lot of that airspace...and in general...are thirsty for bigger volume enclousures to really pound out the deep notes.
The larger (more volume) an enclosure has, the lower the speaker will be able to play, but won't be able to handle as much power without blowing. COnversely, a small enclosure doesn't require a lot of power to play loud notes, but will not be able to play the real low freqency bass notes.

A woofer has no idea what the dimensions or shape of it's enclosure are-- it only cares about the volume of air inside the enclosure. It will be equally uhappy with too much airspace as too little. The trick is in finding just that right amount.
So long as the back of the magnet is far enough away from the wall of the enclosure to allow ventilation for the VC, and the final volume is sufficient to the needs of the driver, the enclosure can be whatever shape you desire.

on the jl audio web site it said the recommened air space was .625 for the 10". My box is .753 and after i factor in the driver displacement (.06
im left with .685. The box is actually a jl audio power wedge box made for the 10w0, the box is a little old but i know its air tight. It still had one of those 10 in it when i got it and i could push on the sub and it would slowly come back up, ive never seen a box so tight before.
i only have the box right now, im trying to figure out what subs to get, i have to wait till next month to start getting my system. im just doing research right now so when the time comes i can just get everything and put it in. once i get everything installed i will post some pics
I don't think 1/4" clearance for the pole vent will be sufficient... You probably need at least 3/4... If you take the carpet off the box, cut out a 10" hole directly behind the existing hole on the back wall, then attach an additional solid backplate (3/4" MDF) that covers that hole you cut... then re-carpet.... that will give you a tad extra airspace and solve the issue of the pole vent clearance...
The ONLY time it'd affect sound is if your box were long enough to be 1/2 wavelength...even x-overed at 60 Hz, that's still around a 10' deep box. Lower frequency, longer box.
So...in short...nope, shape doesn't affect sound at all

How does how long or deep a box is have to do with frequency response. As far as i know, its just volume (more=lower frequency)
oh...nonono...by lower frequency, longer box...I meant in order to affect a specific frequency(standing waves in the enclosure) the box needs to get longer.
~10' deep box to mess with a 60Hz tone
~30' deep box to mess with a 20Hz tone
It doesn't enhance the frequency response, would just severely mess with it due to a standing wave at:
speed of sound/(box length * 2) Hz
In theory. I've never bothered making a box that long...since it'd be a waste of a sheet of wood.

Sorry!
Standing waves = point where waves bounce perfectly back and forth...like if you take a string and jiggle it against a wall. In higher frequencies, these tend to be bad...w/ subs...it's pretty much impossible to get them.
I've never experienced it in a sub...because I don't make boxes that deep, but it's a reason some people put in polyfill(to kill standing waves...which again, not possible, box not deep enough).
Basically...I really shouldn't have said anything and just should have said it doesn't make a difference at all.

Moving:

Looks like that... every 1/2 wave length, you can get a new one

Thanks for all the info guys, ive made up my mind im just going to build a box, after looking at it again im just not sure its going to fit. ive decided to build a box for one sub and make the back of the box angle with the back seat and then build a angled platform on both sides for my two amps. Im even think about trying to fiberglass the outside, never done it before but ive been reading some stuff online and it dont seem that hard, just make sure i get the mixture right. Ill already have my shape i want (except for a few spots) so it shouldnt be that hard. for $40 here is a fiberglass dvd how to i found http://www.caraudiohelp.com/how_to_f...fiberglass.htm looks like it would get me through it. im pretty good at figuring things out and it even goes over my situation of fiberglassing over mdf, think im going to give it a try. I should be able to start my project in june so ill post some pic then
