Default Does your glove box flop down?

Does your glove box flop down or does it drop slowly?

If your glove box flops down and you still have warranty, the dealership should give you a new glove box assuming the tab on the right side of the glove box that the shock clips on to is bent/broken.

I'm about to receive my 3rd glove box (under warranty) in less than 2 years.

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...t=glovebox+tab
I found an old thread (the only one I could find) regarding this issue and it seemed like some people might not even be aware that their glove box is broken.

An easy fix if your tab is only bent would be to put a piece of cardboard between the tab to prevent it from bending and having the shock slip off.

Mine's ok. Of course in almost 5 years of owning the car, I've only opened the glove box a few dozen times.

how is it that your tab for the shock on your glove box is continually breaking?

and as i mentioned in that old thread.. there needs to be more than simple wear and tear.

you keep dumbbells in your glove box?

^^I keep my garage clicker in the glove box so I use it a couple of times a day.
My glove box contains the garage clicker, some pens, and maps.
Nothing heavy.

The problem is probably a combination of poor design and my usage.
When I open the glove box I gently push it down to get it to open faster instead of letting the shock do its thing; it drops down too slow.
It's what's probably causing it to bend/break...but I think the tab should be able to handle more than that.
I'm not slamming the glove box down or anything.

Hmmm, i think mine is down a little bit, maybe by like 1mm, but I'm probably just paranoid, and they hold my dumbells pretty well, but of course if you look at me, you would clearly see that they are 1lb dumbbells, so its not too much strain on it.

If you feel the need to push down on the glove box to make it open faster, why do you care if the shocks are working or even there?

I hate knowing that something on the car is broken.
When I get my new one, I'll be sticking a piece of cardboard in the tab so it won't have a chance to break.
I should have known better and done that the last time.

The tab that holds the piston broke off of my glovebox within the first 6 months. I built a steel hingepin for it. The tab on the dash broke off about 6 months later. That one is metal too now.

As to my glovebox contents... owner's manual, a few DVDs, and my sunglasses.

It's just a poorly designed part.

Mine's been holding up and I've abused the hell out of it. i used to have a nitrous bottle behind it so I used to take the whole thing out and put it back in a few times a week. Now i have my vvti controller in there.

edit: Also, does anyone atually keep gloves in their "glove"box? I keep mine in the trunk.

Ok so this so called "shock" that allows this is totally missing from my glove box. Some guy that worked on my car awhile back lost it, but couldn't find it after I asked him about it. Said he had nothing left after dealership said it was missing. If I go to a junkyard to get one, do I need any special tools to get it out, or can I do it by hand? I already know how to get the glovebox off.
It is kinda fun to torture my shotgun riders tho...I just pop it open without saying anything and it slams their knee, haha!

It just pops off. No tool required.

It really was just a flaw with the TC. I had the same problem and ended up fabing up something for it, I think I used some sort of spring and a wire. Although you could just bungie cord it

Same thing happened to mine. I took a piece of black tape, folded it up and put it between the two tabs that were broken...

Also, it seemed that the movement of the shock was a little bit erratic (it would stick a little and then fall quickly, and then stick again), so I put a very small amount of WD-40 on it (put some WD-40 your fingers then lube the post up with it).

Sorry for the double post, but as a WARNING:

The shock in my car was flipped back into the dash, so I had to reach in and grab it. Be very careful if you have to reach inside the dash! I just noticed that I have a couple new scratches and a nicely bleeding cut on my fingers from the bottom lip of the dash...
