Default Electronic compass project?

For all those people who wish they had an electronic compass, one idea I have floating in my head is a 3-digit degree reading compass (because simple cardinal directions aren't good enough for some of us! Why say SW when you could say 225?). I guess the sensor for this would be something like http://www.pnicorp.com/productDetail?nodeId=c1c4a with enough sensitivity for 10 or 5 degrees resolution. Unfortunately the lower priced sensors only list magnetic sensitivity; there's a "Vector 2Xe" module that lists "high accuracy heading, 2 degrees" at http://www.pnicorp.com/productDetail?nodeId=c39b but the module is $75, and the eval board is $250 (?!?!). Compare to the Vector 2x board with "2 degree accuracy" here for about $50: http://www.robotstore.com/store/prod...507&catid=1583

Then again, you could get the entire consumer-friendly package for $60 here: http://www.shopctglobal.com/?page=sh...900722b3f151c& but then it's not in-dash, won't have any custom color 7-segment goodness, etc.

Wow, almost 23 hours, 0 replies, and 30 views. Time to throw in a few more questions:

- How dorky do you think the dash would look with that V700 dash-top unit? It probably would clash with my intended lighting scheme (red and amber; my favorite color's blue, but I'm getting sick of seeing all the blue LED mods out there, plus the rods in the human eye are less sensitive to red light, which is why you see red illumination in airplane cockpits and ship wheelhouses; my first car mod is planned: red dome lights with white map lights).

- I read in a post about someone getting an aftermarket mirror with compass for about $80 or so. If it's like the GM ones and has a green vacuum fluorescent display, that'll also clash with the scheme (I think that GM is STILL using VFD's for their odometer and radio instrumentation instead of using LED displays; GM always did seem to have a habit of not letting go of old technology). Plus the compass would probably be cardinal + intermediate directions only (45 degree resolution), and not the 5 or 10 degrees resolution that I'm looking for. Anyone at least know of a rearview mirror with a red compass display?
