Default i got a new sub/enclosure! :-)

well as some of you guys know i wanted to try a new sub. i went with the Dayton Reference HO ten. it's in a .85 cubic foot gross about .72-.78 net enclosure tuned to around 28-30 hz. i used the 3" port tubing from parts express with their flares and right angles. the box was a sealed box that i took and cut a hole in. half of the 25" long port is inside the box and the rest is obvious... lol.

this setup is getting around 400 watts rms from my kicker ZX750.1. i went from the Treo SSi to this. it's getting half the power but since the sensitivity is higher it sounds almost as loud. i wasn't looking for pure output. i was more concerned with SQ and this setup has just the sound i was looking for. it's got a much tighter harder hitting sound. it doesn't have the huge hump in the bottom end like the Treo had. it has a more flat sound for sure. it's not "beating your chest in" loud but it does hit very very nicely on double bass and the bass guitar sounds way more accurate and clear.

i know i need to clean up my wiring and i'm going to do the port a lil differently but this is it for the most part. it was cold and i didn't feel like sitting outside trying to route my wires neater. the next warmer day i have it will get fixed. it was about 20 degrees and i was already crazy enough for taking my old 60 pound box out and remounting amps when it's this cold.

anyway on with the pics....

this is what it looked like before...

it was much neater but this will look just as neat when i get time to clean it all up.

it does look a little ghetto at the moment but good luck trying to get a 3" wide by 25" long port inside a box this small. it sounds good which is what matters most. and once i get more time i will make it look nice.

use at least some pvc sealant please and get rid of the duct tape. what i would do is make a trim panel with cutouts for the sub and port

yea i hear ya.... i took a small hit in output, but gained a ton of SQ. it sounds so much flatter and blends very nicely with my front stage. my old setup was very peaky and extremely bottom heavy. the old sub setup sounded sick for rap/hip hop but i rarely listen to that kind of stuff. i don't even own a rap or hip hop cd, and i just deleted the few rap/bass songs i had on my ipod.

so now i'm going for all out SQ but on a tight budget. it's all about the install and tuning anyway. my setup sounds sweet to me and everybody i have auditioned it to agrees. even my dad who is/was all into stereo equipment.

i will make it look better though as time goes on. i will replace the duct tape with glue and the wiring and amp mounting will be cleaned up. it was thrown together real quick and sorta temporary. it will look clean again shortly. i will post new pics up after i get it all cleaned up.

i read quite a bit about this particular sub over on diymobileaudio.com . from what everybody was saying, they sound excellent for the price and have pretty decent output. in the box i have it in it has very very flat response(out of car of course). WINISD says the response is completly flat and the F3 (-3db) point is down at 28hz. that is before cabin gain comes in an takes affect and helps boost the low end even more.

i only have had about an hour to an hour and a half of listening time on it so far, but so far i like it a lot. and as it breaks in (and once it warms back up outside) i'm sure it will sound even better and maybe gain a tad more output as well.

if you really want to increase your sq upgrade your amps. of course it wont be very audible with the rsd's and dayton but its a start. you might also want to get some really high quality wire (individual runs of shielded rca cables) if you're very serious about it.

from what i have read in multiple places the amp's themselves have very little to do with the overall SQ, the same goes with wire or rca cables. SQ has most to do with the actual speakers and most of all the install and tuning of the whole system. you have to have an ear for SQ which i think i do.

the only thing i really would like that i think could really make a nice difference in SQ is my head unit. it would be nice to have a head unit that has independant L/R EQ settings and have the option to go active at one point. also i would like to get an RTA setup on my laptop so i can tune out whatever peaks/dips that i'm not noticing with my own ears.

the h701 + c701 is just a sound processor add on. you can keep your headunit. but the h701 is a sound processor and the c701 is the controller for the sound processor

that should help you tune ANYTHING. hhaa

thats an expensive combo. 300+550. i have time alignment and a 16 band EQ on my current head unit. i just wish it had seperate left and right EQ's, and the option to go active. but it sounds sweet for what it is.

ok i shaped the port a lil differently and also relocated the box in the trunk. it sounds the best when firing to the side like so. it gained a lil output and kicks harder positioned like this. it looks a lil better this way. i'm still gonna have to wait on a section of power wire so i can reroute the wires. but this is pretty much how it is going to look.

this is what it looks like inside the box
