I guess i like playing with fire since i have never taken off the negative when ever i work on my car and i have done a cai, complete stereo overhaul, and multiple light setups(police strobes, head light flashers, led's)

but its a good rule to follow but i just never follow it.

Here is a link to the install guide for the stereo, and it details how to strip down the rear panels and replace the speakers. You don't need a special plastic prytool, just use a popsicle stick or tongue depressor. While you have the car apart, you might as well upgrade the speakers. Good luck!

BTW, dealer list price on the right rear speaker is $104.02 so it may be cheaper to replace them with aftermarket.

I have been working on cars for years, I also have yet to disconnect my battery except for replacing it and or working on the starter / charging system. I am not sure when it was first suggested that disconnecting the battery was required when working on the car. I do understand why, I have accidentally arced positive to ground numerous times and the worst result was a blown fuse.

By the way if your going for aftermarket speakers use crutchfield.com as they will not only supply the correct wire connectors for the tC, they will also supply the mounting plate for the speakers to fit in the factory areas.
