Default Optima: Red or yellow top?

Ok, I have a simple question for you guru's.

Which model number of Red and Yellow top should I get? I'm leaning more to the Red top but I want to know which model number I should get. Can someone help me.

Thanks!

well its best to put the redtop under your hood, b/c thats its used for the crank. yellow is better as a secondary battery. but i have no idea what model it is. try going to sears or something and see if they can give you that.

If they go by the same size/model #'s, the Yellow Top is D34/78. I have it under my hood...have had the same one for 2 years...and it lived through a winter of -40 temps...I'd say it does fine for cranking

Dimensions of 10" L x 6.8" W x 7.8" H (top of posts)

Red top is the same model #

You'll need some very small bushings/some other spacer to use the stock battery tie down since the yellow/red top is a little shorter.

you might want to talk to optima and ask them what they recommend for cranking.

It's right on their site that the Red Top is for cranking. I bought it a few years ago though because I needed a new battery and there was a deal on the Yellow Top. If it can survive 2 ND winters, I'm really not worried about it's cranking ability.

Right off their site. A Yellow Top is sufficient, notice that it's the same power as a normal battery in your car for the first 5 seconds...dead of winter, it doesn't take my car 5 seconds of cranking to start=no worries

yes thats right mandos. but whats better for cranking? a red top correct? yes the yellow top can also be used for cranking, and thats what your using which is fine. i point was that the red top is better, and most likely what more people recommend. you just got the yellow top b/c you got a good deal on it.

Personally, I think deep cycle batteries are good for trolling motors on bass boats, but they have no place in a car. Deep cycle batteries have greater internal resistance than a standard battery which makes them harder to charge. You shouldn't need an extra battery, but if you do get one, the last thing you want to do in mix different types of batteries.
When my stock battery goes, I replace it with the biggest "DieHard Gold" that fits.

Thousands of performance cars with companies and even more audiophiles use Optima deep cycles for their insanely good cranking power, and ability to stand up better to vibration and tough conditions....

Yellow or Red top, they'll both be much better than your typical auto battery
