Question Rear Trunk/Hatch = Vibrates.

I don't have a problem with the vibration of the windows, rear view-mirror or the side mirrors. Nor is there a problem for me in the car, but I took a step outside of my car today to find that the bass is so heavy from some songs, it shakes the trunk in tone. Not a big deal as far as license plate goes because i put two chunks of rubber between the plate and car to keep it from going crazy. Something inside of the trunk/hatch itself is causing a large amount of noise from 3 12" subs aimed to the center. I planned on dynamat -- lining the back portion of the car to help keep the bass more inward, but what I need is a guide and any needed tools to take off the interior parts of it and insert foam between the "plastic ribs" as this may be the cause [i've seen quite a few posts on the web about people doing this, although havn't found a guide].

Im sure the dynamat [or alternative for cheaper] will help this slightly, but I seriously doubt it'll be enough to truely make a difference.

*I've installed 270W Sony Xplods 6.1/2" Speakers in the doors without doing any damage other than cutting out the factory set/saving the mount without a guide of any sort. PS, should anybody follow the same, Gorilla Glue standard worked amazing. [[Im 17, so its somewhat of a proud moment ^_^]]

^I followed that DIY a while ago. That didn't do anything for my problem. I ended up finding another thread that mentioned putting down thick one sided sticky foam on the trunk bump stops. I did that, and have been vibration free for 6+ months. I'd try that first, as it's easier than the previous idea.

But them You still have the problem? And you are right about the Dynamats. They will have little if not any effect on the rattling inside the car.

I recently just dyne matted by trunk. Still get the vibration at different tones with 2 10" subs. It is coming from the handle itself along with the license plate. Kind of hard to fix if you ask me.

Yo, there is not mat that will get rid of that rattle. that actual problem isn't the lid. its not the lid that's rattling, its the latch. a piece of duct tape around that plastic part behind it might help. get in the hatch and close it and watch that whole latch assembly rattle and you'll see what you need to tighten up to get it to stop. good luck. ive been there done that. try it out

Cut out a 3mm thick strip of foam to wrap around the bracket that the trunk-hatch locks to, that cut down about half the sound. But that's plenty for me, since the bass drowns out most of the vibration sound.

My 12's literally shook the stock 3rd brake light harness until it didn't function anymore. Take the hatch apart, and find anything around the latch area with any play in it. Wrap up anything you can with tape, and fill up any space with some foam tape like mentioned earlier. My biggest problem was the license plate which is the easiest fix. A crumpled up rag or some newspaper underneath it should do the trick.

My rattle came from my trunk flexing on turns. It sounded like a shock bottoming out. I saw a thread here somewhere which had a 2 part easy fix. It may not fix your issue, since every rattle in the trunk area differs for each person on here. I removed the 2 plastic washers on the bumper near the hatch latch. The installed a rubber washer on top of the existing plastic ones. Ordered a new bump stop for the bottom of the trunk which lines up with the plastic washer on the bumper. These bump stops are actually a little longer than the stock ones. It was about $4-5 bucks depends on your area. Very cheap and easy fix.

Guess what this really worked. Ive been driving around with this sound since feb of 2005 and just got used to it. My sub also helped cancel out the noise. But for those folks who have not tried this, give it a shot. It is inexpensive and do not need to have tons of mechanical knowledge to do this.

Let me know how this worked out for you!.
