What do you dislike about the sound now, what do you mean by "sound way nicer"?
As for louder, get an amp to power them, don't use HeadUnit power, even an aftermarket model. You don't have to upgrade the HU now if you'd rather wait, as an amp with high-pass crossover will greatly improved the sound quality of the stock speakers.
If you get an amp first, that alone might improve the sound enough to please you. If not, then replace the stock speakers with whatever component set you like (go listen for yourself, rather than ask for opinions) and can afford, and you'll already have an amp to power them adequately. If at that point you're still not pleased, upgrade the HU, then look into changing speaker placement, like moving them from the doors to custom kick panels.

An amp will likely give you blown factory speakers when you try to get them to keep up with the sub.
New speakers are your best bet. It doesn't matter what you do to the signal before it reaches the speakers if the speakers aren't any good. Think about it this way, if you hook up the best HD receiver or Blu-ray player to a regular CRT based tv, what are you going to see. I promise you it will not be HD. It's the same with speakers. Be aware that each speaker has different power requirments and you don't want to buy a set that the head unit can't play unless you can afford an amp right away. Also keep in mind that if you just replace the speakers, you'll get better highs and a more dynamic sound but normally you'll lose some low end because of power demands of the speakers and the factory setup of speakers.
If you decide to get a new head unit, I recommend Pioneer Premiere equipment. They are quality pieces with loads of options. I've had good experiences with them. I used to use Alpine but the CD players were very finicky when it came to burned discs and they also broke in a relatively short period of time. They lasted more than a year but I don't like replacing head units every 1-3 years unless technology has changed dramatically like the change from cassettes to CDs.
