I have a 100k warranty on the car but i would think that something like this wouldnt be covered for 100k miles. I was thinking about finding out how to take the roof panel off (when the warranty expires) and use a dynomat kind of substance to kill the sound. Does anybody think this would work? I only have 18k miles on my car but have had the sound for the past 8k miles. If anybody knows the answer to either (or both) questions please give feedback. This is one issue I need to do the right thing with because its really bothering me. Prob in feb I am going to take sections of the car apart and dynomat (something like that) the trunk, doors, and rear side panels where the speakers are. Should I just do the roof also or will this not fix the crackle sound? I know they already replaced the tracks and that was under warranty but I think the sound is now comming from the beam a few inches from the rear/top light.
Don't panic... scion even sent a corporate person out to fix mine,, fix only lasts a couple days.. HOWEVER... i fixed it my self. i will try to take some pics today and post them showing exactly where you have to put some goopy silicone lubricante. since i have done this.. not a sound from the roof... let the suspense start now....
here a link for my yahoo photos for now

I think this rattling thing has been beaten to death on these forums........
I'm not trying to lessen anyone's issues with their cars, but hopefully someone has a fix for this person 'cause I'm sick of hearing about it...... I know people that have had the rattle fixed at their respective dealers, so it can be done.
And if this is a design flaw in the tC, so be it. This does not make it a bad car by any means. Go take a ride in a Focus or Cavalier with 30K miles on it and you'll see the difference.

If its a design flaw, why are the tC's perfectly silent for the first 11,000 miles and then rattle like a... well, like a rattle, after that.
Mine is embarrassingly bad.
I think its more likely a quality/durability issue than a design issue. If it was design they'd rattle right off the factory floor.

I just don't think people should trash the reputation of a great car online for all to see just because they are having issues with their own personal vehicle. Like it or not, the tC is the value leader in its class, PERIOD. If you want to sell your tC for something else simply because of a rattle, well, you are much more picky than myself.
Scion knew this was going to happen. They stated when they came out with these cars that their target audience, and most buyers, want almost everything for almost nothing. They want the quality of Lexus without paying for it. I think Toyota should be congratulated for coming out with a car, brand new, never sold anywhere else and only having the issues it has had. Bravo Toyota! People need to take it upon themselves to have these issues resolved. Don't get on these forums and say you sold your tC or traded in your xB because it was a piece of trash that rattled like crazy after 12,000 miles. Your new piece of trash will have rattles......trust me.
Ooops. Guess I "rattled" on there. Good luck with your fix!!!

If this is the best toyota can do, considering I spent 34 TIMES as much money, I do in fact feel entitled to tell people about the car's negative qualities. In the interest of fairness I'll also mention the car's positive qualities, but that's not what this tread is about.

Sort of a weird story, a few weeks ago it was nearly 60 degrees out and raining at 3pm and the temperature dropped to 20 in the span of 3 and half hours. The next morning there was the worst rattling I have ever heard. It was really loud and sounded like the car was disintegrating. After about half an hour of driving the noise suddenly stopped.
No idea what the heck it was, all I can think of is that the water that drips down between the body and the hatch when you open it up froze and was causing all the noise until the car warmed up and it melted.
No sense in taking by the dealer now, it doesn't make a peep.
anyone else have something like this happen?

The design of the roof is cool, but it does allow a lot of water in and surely it froze/expanded and would do that. Warming up caused it to stop, so you're likely dead-on.

yeah i had the same thing happen with water freezing and causing all that noise.. my solution? silicone spray. Sprayed that all over the weather stripping and ice becomes more difficult to form in those areas.. also after it rains and is going to freeze, I open the sunroof and dry off the water so that it won't happen..
try some silicone spray onto a rag and then rub the rag over the weather stripping around the sunroof.. that will probably help a lot..

that's a good look ^
My TC has all the usual rattles but the noise the ice made was truly horrible. I honestly thought that either the sunroof would blow off or some interior trim would come down on my head.
