I just took the plunge and attempted this fix. I could take it no more. Seems the squeek of death was getting worse every day. We'll see if it is gone tomorrow...

While I was at it, I moved my fog light switch to the left-most slot of the four. Not quite sure why they didn't do that by default. You can't see the right-most two slots with the steering wheel in the way.

:?

Another thing that I find really troubling about this whole ordeal, is that SOOOO many people have it, I heard it on a rental tC while getting my lowering springs in, and a girl I know has it too, yet my dealer (Rodland Scion -- who sucks ___ BTW!) played it off like they had never heard of this and didn't know what I was talking about. that's BULL____. They need to own up to this and fix it right there while you wait. I paid $30k for my tC from the dealer with all the extras, and I shouldn't have to be tearing apart the dash to fix their defect.

This fix works wonders. I used the first method and I've been squeak free for months now.

fastandcurious, dude, you are a life-saver! Today was the first time since last August that I could drive my car in peace, go over all the bumps I wanted, crank my stereo as loud as I wanted, and not have that brain-numbing squeek.

::praise::

Holy crap!! I've been hearing that squeak ever since I drove off the lot, and no one has been able to fix it! Not Toyota, not BB (where I had my Alpine installed), no one!

I'm so trying this when I get home...now where can you get that 3M adhesive?

Anywhere. Your local supermarket should sell it, as would a hardware store or drugstore. I just used the little squares. But I suspect you can use most anything, even a wad of tissue paper taped in. You just want to prevent the plastic from rubbing.

Cool, thanks! It's a lot better than my solution.
Now to fix what I broke from pounding on the A/C vent.

wow, i didn't know people were still posting in this thread lol. i'm very happy to hear that this fix is still helping tc owners. it really does stink that we have to deal with this, but at the very least there is a solution.

Well, mine isn't quite fixed. Think I messed it up, but when I get a chance again, I'll rip it apart, and see if I can't get it to work. Thanks though!

Anyone know where I can find all the TSBs. The more I own the car the more everything seems to rattle, I have '06 and I heard there are TSBs to some of these.

Default All you need is foam, foam is your friend

The method I tried worked perfectly. I had a high pitch chirp sometimes from the center console. I never figured it out until I came across this thread. I ended up putting a few pieces of foam underneath the two vents. After that never had that noise come back. AWESOME!

Now I just have the deal with the rattle coming from the back, but I will deal with that when I put in my third tail light and license plate lights.

I know what fastandcurious did was mounting tape, just wanted to know if rubber foam tape for weather stripping would work too? Or do you need something harder to separate the plastic?

I'm pretty sure the idea is anything to prevent the two pieces of plastic from touching. I think weather stripping should be fine too as long as it stays there. Just tape it down with some electrical tape or duct tape or something.

okay thanks.. yeah was thinking it should be something that stays there and doesn't move. and you are right, about foam tape moving. that's probably what fastandcurious went with the mounting tape, more rigid and stays put.

cool.. thanks for the reply!

BACK FROM THE DEAD!!!

i searched for this thread because the same noise was driving me nuts!after examining the HVAC a little i found a better solution to the squeak problem.

in fastandcurious' pictures, you can clearly see where the squeak comes from. this little rod rubs and squeaks against the housing it sits in.

in this image you can see the dust left behind from all the friction of those pieces rubbing together!!! what we wanna do is eliminate that friction! no friction, no sound.

the answer is simple. take a cotton swab, swab a little plastic lube (petroleum jelly works fine) and swab it onto the little pinion. press down on the vents so it sticks out all the way, and make sure to lube the whole piece. do the same to the other side and you will never hear that squeak again!
