Default Very frusturating headunit...

So I bought my tc used, its rebuilt,poorly... and I've always had a problem with the headunit and steering wheel controls. The steering wheel controls have NEVER worked for me since I've bought the car. The headunit was fine in the beginning, but I noticed that without me touching anything it'll change the radio station I'm listening to and also turns the volume all the way up or all the way down(volume doesn't happen too often). It wasn't so bad at first but now it's gotten to the point where I can barely stayed tuned on one station at all...it's like radio is stuck on scan. Again, I touch absolutely nothing and the radio just changes all by itself, although if I do get lucky and can tune into something for a few seconds if I go over a bump that'll make it change as well.

I don't know if the steering wheel controls not working has anything to do with the headunit doing all this crap and I don't really wanna take anything apart yet because my way of fixing things is by brute force.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Will punching it work?Is my tc possessed?HALP PLZ!

(I have looked...for weeks.)

If you aren't confident with taking things like that apart and doing it yourself my best advice would be to go and have it checked out by a shop or a dealer.

nah,stock 07 headunit.

I'd like to take a stab at it before bringing it anywhere cause I could just spend that money on an aftermarket unit, which was the plan anyways..but for now I'd like to be able to at least listen to radio normally.

Thx so far

do you have any idea if the previous owner had an aftermarket HU in it? if they did, the steering controls might not work since there is another piece you need if you go aftermarket. after returning everything to stock they may have either not connected the wires for them, or the other piece (i forget the name of it) might have messed with them. as far as the skipping problem, there might be a short inside the deck thats causing the random scanning but thats just a guess.

If it's being influenced by bumpy roads a wire might be loose in it's connection and may be moving around when you hit a bump.

Really your best bet is to pull it out and check a look at the wiring harness and follow the wires to see if anything is loose, disconnectd, or corroded. If you can get your hands on a wiring diagram that would help a lot...provided you know how to read them..it's not hard to learn how to do though.

Sounds like you have a 2006 radio in an 07, the 06's had the exact problem with the radio changing stations/channels randomly like you mentioned.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to fix it, not worth it. Best solution is to get a new headunit, like an aftermarket that has steering wheel controls capability (usually an add-on interface is needed).

here is the tsb for that unit in case you wanted to read about it.

No idea if he had an aftermarket HU but would make sense with the steering wheel controls...

I'll go take a look now to see if any wires are loose...figured that would be the problem tbh because of the bumping..but it also does it when I'm idling and I won't touch a thing yet it'll still change.

@sciontc_mich-thx for that info..very interesting

thx all gonna go check this out real quick

@hardknox - no problem, glad to help, yeah it seems that some of those radios had a problem in the electronics. makes me wonder if the 07 you have, had a radio put in at the dealer which was an 06.

I believe the 05-06 radios don't have a **** for volume instead they have an up and down button right?

Mine does have a volume ****~

Anyways, i took the headunit out and looked at all the wires...everything seemed fine,no corrosion, no loose or disconnected wires. So i just unplugged/replugged everything and went on with my day. Didn't follow the steering wheel control wires cause eh..pita,those torque bolts are on so dam tight!

Did a nice drive today and the volume didn't change so maybe something was loose and all I needed to do was replug it..but was usuing ipod so no idea if it still changes channels, will know tmw morning though.

Thx for the help guys!If it still changes stations ill just say fuggit nd get an aftermarket.
