Default When taking apart the waterfall...???

I'm taking the waterfall apart to paint it...and the ring around the **** for temp control is a pain to take off...is there a trick to it? I don't want to twist so hard I break it...and obiously that needs to come off so I don't paint over where it lights up...How do I go about doing that?

cover it with a towel and use plier to pull it out. Then use a those small watch repair screwdriver at the back to get the ring out.
