*NEW* Hatch Rattle Fix
Well my vacation from the rattles has come to an end
. Almost two weeks ago from weds the car was in the shop and my rattle came back UGH . Thats fine I will keep her for now , just aggrivating when I drive with no stereo on sometimes . Atleast I did enjoy my second chance at a new car (when they quieted the rattles) LOL . It would be nice if they ever did find out what it is or what vin numbers are affected by it . Guess time will tell , as for this fight I walk away LOL .
You would like Scion and us could figure it out as it definitely is with the hatch closed so something is hitting. If I ride with the hatch UP, there is NO rattle. So where is this damn rattle coming from. From all the "fixes", one of them should have worked by now.
And it has to be the same on all the cars reporting the passenger side hatch rattle!! As my sometimes comes and goes but mostly it does rattle, I would think it might be on how hard/soft I close the hatch. But grasping at straws now.....
Does everyone agree that there is NO hatch rattle when the hatch is up???

Never tried driving with the hatch open , I suppose I could give it a shot and see what happens . I aint gonna hold my breath on this one . I have a feeling though the rattle we all here is a strange one that gets carried through the body parts( if that makes sence) The rattle might sound like its coming from the sunroof but in actuality its coming from the hatch . Thats probably the one reason this rattle is so hard to correct .

This morning I had my wife drive and I sat in back. From what I could tell the "bad" pinging rattle was coming from the dome light area and NOT the hatch. When I was driving I just knew it was coming from the back. I still heard a little shaking/rattle from the hatch but no worse/better than my other cars.
So I took the dome light piece off and dropped the assembly (just let it hang there). I did NOT NOT hear the rattle. After ten minutes, I put dome light in place and still did not hear the rattle.
So this one is a strange one. So try dropping the dome light and driving to see if rattle goes away. When you put it back you will notice the plastic clips rests on metal as you snap it back in. So maybe the plastic against metal is causing it????? If this is the case, maybe spraying some wet lithium up there will stop it.
But then I am not sure if maybe by luck it stopped on its own and the rattle is really with the hatch.... Time will tell.
There was another post several weeks ago about someone saying their rattle was in the dome light.
Least this is another easy try/fix.

I'll fill you in on what I think will be another failed fixing attempt this coming 27th. I honestly dont see how a so called master tech will be different than any other tech. They're all useless. I have no problems going to arbitration with Toyota if they dont fix it this time. I heard it was a grueling process though.
Me personally I am chocking this one up for Toyota . They win this round , and I will not allow another round (meaning I am not getting another toyota product) . I will hold on to the car for a bit till I get more financially set and saved up and the tc goes down the road . By far customer service (Scion Corporate) has been outstanding very polite . Overall my customer satisfaction with dealers and product has been the lowest I have expierenced in any car company I have been with . I have been with Dodge , Ford , Honda , Mazda , Toyota ranks lowest on that scale . Before anyone pulls out the Dodge makes crap and Ford makes crap , I never expierenced any probs with any of those vehicles compared to this . Sorry but because it has a T or S(scion) doesnt make it the greatest car company in teh world . Nor does it condone using cheap materials and dressing them up to look premium warrent the price tag . My Dodge was plastic through and through , but they didnt try to pass it off as something else , you knew what you were getting and the expectations of the product was as to be expected . Yeah I had a rattle in my Dodge , But I also paid less for my Dodge and it was a truck . COMES WITH THE TERRITORY , But a Toyota (passenger vehicle) should be well built and have a quiet ride . Also when I mean well built I mean interior not exterior . After all you spend more time in the car then you do outside of it when your driving , unless they have changed how people drive vehicles and I havent recieved the memo yet . Been fun but I give up on this , the new honda civic sounds better with each bump I hit in the road . Also before the "STOP COMPLAINING" members chime in , This is a message board to voice your opinion , if you dont like hearing the complaining I suggest you stop lookin at these kinda threads .
ok I got my car back just now
and I have to say its about 90% better I guess we will have to see if it stays quiet.
they replaced the headliner, realigned sunroof assembly, and adjusted sunroof deflector
anyone have a website and check exactly what these part numbers are?

wow, replaced the headliner huh? I wonder what prompted that. Hope it works and stays gone for you, I'm about ready to start ripping into mine and finding the cause soon too, especially since i'll be putting in my car audio stuff soon, and the last thing I need is some random rattle/noise ruining that!

Here is my latest on the "hatch" rattle which is really the dome light. Had a friend ride in the back. With the dome light unclipped and hanging, he put his hand on the front metal piece and put a little pressure down. RATTLE GONE. We did this 5-6 times and each time a little pressure was put on the metal, it went away. However, we could not figure out what was causing the rattle. It seems to be directly where the dome light is and real close to either side. It is not as far as the plastic baffles that was in another post for a fix. Everything looked tight.
I thought the rattle was coming from the hatch but it is above the dome light. You should have someone sit in the back and ensure your rattle is really coming from the hatch and not the dome area.
Kevin
PS. Now we just have to come up with a solution to put some permanent downward pressure on the metal portion. Also to see if this last and the dreaded rattle does NOT come back as was the case with many of the prior "fixes" (foam tape on stoppers, electrical tape on hatch latch, etc.)

based on the post ive read, dont u guys think tha the rattle problem is nbot only isolated in one area? meaning one car might have a rattle on their hatch or the other on ther dome light? in my case, i can also hear some rattles but i guess it doesnt bother me because maybe its not as wrost than the others and in span of a year i only put up 6000miles on it... nonetheless, being it a new car, nobody expects to hear any rattles in it...
Well its a known issue, so I suspect its all the same problem for the most part. But its a sneaky rattle, so people will have different perceptions of where it is coming from. I thought it was the hatch latch at first, then realized it sounded more like its coming from the strut areas after I learned of the tsb. Then the service people pointed out its the rear roof.
I would still suggest to anyone having the rattle to have a person ride in the back to definitely isolate where the rattle is coming from. As Captain tc said, "this rattle is very sneaky" in that it comes and goes so you think you have a fix and "it's back".....
