Blind Spot
My favorite part of that first article is “When was the last time your own car ran into itself?”…… Some people will need a few moments to think about that one…..
That’s some good info. My mirrors were pretty darn close, but after re-adjusting them it makes a world of difference. You can see more of what’s going on beside you than turning your body and moving the “blind spot” to in-front of you.
tcKing – I don’t aim them down for backing up, but I do when I parallel park.

Ya, BMWs will automatically aim the passenger's side mirror down to help you back it up, but I need to be careful not to leave mine too low!
HERE'S A GOOD QUESTION THOUGH: While adjusting our side mirrors, how do you all cope with having to sit back, look at your mirrors, and then lean forward to read the controls to make the adjustments? Dontcha wish you could adjust them WHILE sitting back comfortably in your seat?

It's just a basic up down right left config... so I think I misunderstood your question, maybe?

Sitting (and driving) properly means having the wheel within easy reach. If you can't reach the mirror controls, odds are that you are having to fully stretch out your arms to drive (which leads to poor vehicle control and precision). When's the last time you've seen a race car driver sit in such a silly manner.
But then again, maybe you have very long legs. . . in which you don't have a choice. But if you're of normal stature and are leaning back with your arms out and slouching, it's not the car's fault; it's yours.
Another advantage to having the side mirrors out as the links suggest is that you won't be blinded by headlights behind you at night. When cars are at the point where their headlights are in your mirrors, they will now be up far enough that their headlights are pointed ahead and not at you. That, combined with a tinted rear window (or the autodimming rearview mirror) and driving at night will be better than ever before.
