it probably means that the pads are low so you'll need to buy new ones...just check them....its usually easy to tell just by looking

How rough are you on your brakes? Like she said, check the brake pads and make sure that they have plenty of pad left. Fortunately, you can do this easily without removing the rim b/c of the open pattern. You may use a flashlight though to make life a bit easier if you are in a darker place...

i have about 26k on my car, and when i first step on my brakes, i hear a squeiling also, but if i press a little harder, it goes away. I have been told that it is dirt etc getting on the pads.

Or it could be low pads.

btw, if you wait to confirm that you will run out of pad and then destroy your rotor. Then if you continue to wait your piston will come out of the caliper and you brake fluid will leak out causing a total brake failure.

Moral of the story, is check first, check again, and then call it dirt.

seems that some of the tc's are squeaking around 12k-15k miles. typical for a year's worth of driving. If you have enough pad left, and not scraping on the backing plates, then it needs some anti-noise compound. Plus toyota recommends brake caliper grease on the mounting slots where the pads mount up. I believe they recommend a lithium soap based grease if i remember it right. (can get it from the toyota parts counter) Plus use the anti-noise compound on the backs of the pad shims, the outer portion that caliper touches.

That's most likely the noise as long as you still have rotors and pads in good shape. It's typical, a year's worth of driving can result in these parts getting a bit rusty or dirt, etc.. formed in those metal attachment points.

Any good mechanic would be able to help you fix this up. and yes this will cure the squeaking.
