there's a post already on this somewhere.

there is a tray, but toyota doesn't make a filter for it specifically and recommends not putting one in.

there was one guy on the other thread that was really into making his own filter and i believe had a how to

Here's the HOW TO for the xB... should be a similar process if you make one for your tC.

Any reason for "recommends not"?

I'd be curious if anyone has any info on "why not" as well. I mean, I can see not selling it with one b/c people are cheap... but why put the ability if you "shouldn't" use one?

Er, excuse me, but isn't Toyota part number 88568-52010 the cabin air filter for all Scions?

That's the one Scion dealers sell...

well I looked found it and followed the instructions posted in Tech. I made my own out of web absord, which they used in the tech. I noticed that it restricts air coming through the vents. Once it gets hotter I will see if it does anything to the A/C

Is this in the manual somewhere? If so, I missed it.

Search function works well for this issue.
Then read the posts relating to this subject.
Then put the filter in your car.
Then be happy.

How many times has this been discussed?

go to home depot and buy a 3m filter for like $9 . its about 2'x3' so you can cut out about 6 or 8 of them. 3m recommends 3 month use before replacing. so for $9 it'll last you about a year or two.

edit: these things here, just cut to size.

Here you go people: eBay link

Says for xA/xB ... but as people are noting, the tC is apparently the same. If you google the part number, you'll get some dealer results selling for about $20.

Don't buy the toyota filter. It costs too much. Go to home depot, or target, or walmart and make one yourself. Takes five minutes to cut one out and install it.
I pray you can do this...

Sure... could do this... but I would actually rather spend the extra couple bucks for something that is specifically made for it. It's not the part of making something to put in it. But buying an OEM part. Just a personal opinion. I'm sure that most people have no problem putting another filter in there... and that's fine.

Yeah, your better off getting a furnace one instead of the $26 toyota one. Get one with the charcoal filter and get rid of those unwanted outside smells!

faq site and a how to make your own...somewhere on there:

if you can safely operate a pair of scissors, you can make a cabin air filter. having working knowledge of a measuring tape or ruler also helps tremendously. however, if you have more money than you know what to do with, the toyota filter might just be right for you.

What everyone is saying is that the homeade filter is a better all around filter for less money. You can make one with not only the normal filter but also an activated charcoal filter to eliminate smells for about 7% of the cost of a toyota filter. Just trying to be helpful. The "OEM" part is nothing but a slightly lower quality filter (with the same lifespan) with toyotas name and a much larger price tag.

In all of this talk, no one has mentioned the second filter. My owners manual clearly
shows two different filters. The second one appears to be for filtering the internal
air from the cabin and somehow attaches to the face of the airbox. Toyota doesn't
offer this filter in any parts catalog. Any clues?
