cabin air filter question
oo ic..well i was plannin on doin the DIY 3M filter cut out but someone said it made it smell like mildew and they said the way to prevent that is to lightly spray it with lysol or chlorox and it wont happen. im still gonna do it either way. houston air is naaasty! lol
Right... someone said you could throw a dryer sheet on there (I'd be afraid of it somehow getting lost in the vent) to make it smell good. A few sprays of lysol would kill some germs in there, at least for a while. I can vouch for the fact that even in Seattle, absolutely no mildew smell. That person probably uses the air conditioner too much. I rarely use it.

I tried to find one with a charcoal layer, but I couldn't - do you have any pictures or brands or anything? Also, how do you get a charcoal layer filter that you can cut into quarters without making a huge mess?

Someone else posted pics of one almost identical to mine (just a different brand I believe). The black peice is the activated carbon layer (sorry if I was confusing by saying charcoal, the activated carbon is a little easier to work with. Same basic concept, but allows more airflow and makes less mess). The green peice is the electrostatic filter. You can see the grid in his pictures as well. I got mine at Home Depot for about 10 bucks. It will make 6 filters. On the tC, you want to put the charcoal layer on the bottom of the tray, then the green peice, then your grid. Works great so far! I am sure that a true hepa filter and a true charcoal filter would filter out more, but it would also greatly reduce airflow.

But, in reality, anything that keeps our cars a bit more clean is great. I think the "Home Depot" solution is a great idea.
Nice - that looks like it would work good and fit good too, since it doesn't have the rigid edges. I'll look for that next time, but the one I've got still has two more filters in it - give me 6 months or so.

When I said that I had two more filters, I was saying that the filter I bought could be cut into four pieces, so I have two pieces left. The filter itself is a one piece - it's a 3M filtrete. It works good, but I'd like the odor removing layers too. If you were talking to someone else, nevermind

I bought a 3M Filtreat filter panel for Home Depot yesterday and installed a cut portion of the filter in the filter holder of my tC.
Boy, it was not that easy pulling and cutting the filter element from the cardboard frame without ripping off some of the filter media. Cutting it wasn't that easy too Looks like it will work OK, I installed the filter with the wires facing upward. I figure there is a plastic grid already molded into the filter holder's bottom. It cost me about 10 bucks for the filter, with up to eight more pieces I can get from what's left over,
I think I will just buy the Toyota filters next time. It was just too much work and a hassle to cut away the 3M filter material from it's cardboard frame, and I think that some unfiltered air can escape through the sides because there's no way to get the edges perfectly straight.
P.S., just curious, which way does the air flow through the filter? From top to bottom, or from bottom up??
Chombi
