cabin air filter question

Boy, it was not that easy pulling and cutting the filter element from the cardboard frame without ripping off some of the filter media. Cutting it wasn't that easy too Looks like it will work OK, I installed the filter with the wires facing upward. I figure there is a plastic grid already molded into the filter holder's bottom. It cost me about 10 bucks for the filter, with up to eight more pieces I can get from what's left over,
I think I will just buy the Toyota filters next time. It was just too much work and a hassle to cut away the 3M filter material from it's cardboard frame, and I think that some unfiltered air can escape through the sides because there's no way to get the edges perfectly straight.
P.S., just curious, which way does the air flow through the filter? From top to bottom, or from bottom up??
