you paid for other things done... the tsb was a free fix..

not anyone's fault but your own to authorize them to do other work which they can charge you for.

and if you didn't authorize it.. that's only when you can complain.

-Filters inside the car AC
(Buy a filter pad at Lowe's, Target, or Home Depot for $4-$20. Use tray as template and cut away. 1 pad can make 4+ filters.)

-Rotate Tires
(Believe it or not, the stock jack works quite well for this. I can jack up one side of the car and manage to get both tires off the ground. All 4 tires shouldn't take longer than 10-15 mins.)

-Fluid Filling
(DIY. Should take long at all)

-Oil Change and Filter
(DIY or go to Midas. Oil change and fluids ran me $23.95 at Midas.)

-30 K stuff really
(Midas. Should be more than $50.)

-I think they waxed my car too
(Do not let them touch your car!! That should be rule #1!! DIY.)

Not sure what impulse buying is though. I just want to be friendly and not look stupid.

I just changed the title too.

You = $380
Me = Roughly $108.95 and 58 mins if you were to do these all at once.

Wait a tick...if you can get 4-5 filters out of one 14"x25"x1" filter pad, that's about $30 a filter you would save because that's how much the OEM filter is. Basically, it would all be free.

so, what I'm wondering ...

When you went in there, you went in for the recall. At what point between driving into the service dept, and driving out, did they tell you all the maintenance they were going to do?
When they told you that maintenance, did they tell you how much it would cost? Was that before you left the dealership and dropped off your car? Did you continue to think about it while you were without car, making you more and more angry before you even went to get your car? Did you smile, say thank you, then sign the forms saying you asked them to do this service, then give them the money?

cus ... if someone says to me, Hey, we want to do some work on your car, maintenance stuff that needs to be done, then they say Ok, well it's going to cost $300, we'll get it done while we're fixing your airbag .... being a member of ScionLife, in all its flaming glory, would know in the back of my year that surely there's a cheaper, or at least alternative, way of doing thing. but that's just me

sorry dude, better luck next time

Friend with a tC needed new headlights was quoted $20 each labor to change them and $20 each for the bulbs by the dealer where he baught the car - Bought the bulbs himself for $6 I think and changed them in under a minute each never having done it before.

Don't ever have the dealer do any work that you can do for yourself. JUST SAY NO!

I'd feel semi-bad for him if it wasn't for the "I'm tired of the tC" comment, but PWNED pretty much describes his situation! Good call.

My dealership tried putting a handgun at my head and tried high pressuring me into the 30k check up and new tires. I straight out said "No; not today! Car payment is due I'll do it (MAYBE ) begining of June." I didn't like it much that the tech went to me and straight out told me "You need to take better of your car..." I know the car can handle without until payday and take it to Midas for it.
Because they treated me like ****... they will never get my returned business including car buying.

Best thing you can do is just live and learn man. We've all made mistakes, and errors in judgment,. Accept the flames you've gotten as part of the lesson, and just be more aware in the future. The likelihood of getting any of that money back is pretty slim being as you signed off on it already, so stop kicking yourself, and become more proactive in you car maintenance. Who knows, by doing that you may end up liking your car more.

At the rate that they charge that $280 labor was probably less than 3 hours total work plus writing it up and going over teh bill and runing for parts etc. It adds up pretty quick and even changing your own oil if you noted all the time it comes out to at least an hour after shopping for the oil and cleanup. You have to realize that NOTHING is cheep anymore and hourly rates in dealerships and auto repair centers are approaching if not up to or over $100 an hour.
I face this all the time at my computer repair rate of only $50 an hour many times I can't fix someones computer for less than 3-4 hours work and they don't want to pay that much when they think it is cheeper to buy a new one - until you factor in the setup and software and data in it mostly it really isn't worth it. Yet I can't even get customers to keep the vent holes clean so it runs with proper cooling.

3 facts of life:

1. death
2. taxes
3. dealerships wanting to charge you ridiculously high $$ for work you CAN do yourself, LEARN to do yourself, or have done cheaper by an independent mechanic

I baught the floor mats after a couple a visits but they never had any touchup paint in stock. The mats are great except for the hooks in the front that leave bumps on the floor where you rest your feet.
