Slow down buddy.

Without details no one can answer either of those for you.

So... have you done anything recently? Has it acted differently lately? Have you recently filled up the gas tank? Did you try to re-attach the gas cap?

Try the gas cap first... drive for a while... if it stays on, go to an Autozone and have them read the code. That will give us a lot more info.

Does it really come on if you leave the gas cap off?! I'm going to try that.

Yes it can come on if you don't tighten it. I believe it says it in the owners manual. Did for my moms jetta. Don't try it!

The light does come on if the gas cap is not tighten correctly. You need to make sure you hear the clicking when you close it.

car. not. working.

how. much?

wow, great way to start a thread.

if it's not the gas cap, get the code read. And you're positive it's the check engine light and not the maintenance required light? my gf mixed the two up...

You'll get a code for the EVAP system. Definitely happens and it's usually the first thing ANYONE will recommend you do - tighten your gas cap. Autozone, the dealer, they all suggest that first.

Strange, I know... that it would cause that. Complex systems though.

Yeah the light came on for me for a loose gas cap. I had my friend read the CEL code and it was an "EVAP minor emissions leak". I tightened the gas cap and the CEL light automatically went away after a few miles
