help my engine light just came on
Slow down buddy.
Without details no one can answer either of those for you.
So... have you done anything recently? Has it acted differently lately? Have you recently filled up the gas tank? Did you try to re-attach the gas cap?
Try the gas cap first... drive for a while... if it stays on, go to an Autozone and have them read the code. That will give us a lot more info.

car. not. working.
how. much?
wow, great way to start a thread.
if it's not the gas cap, get the code read. And you're positive it's the check engine light and not the maintenance required light? my gf mixed the two up...

Strange, I know... that it would cause that. Complex systems though.
Yeah the light came on for me for a loose gas cap. I had my friend read the CEL code and it was an "EVAP minor emissions leak". I tightened the gas cap and the CEL light automatically went away after a few miles
basically, your screwed. the car will self destruct in approx. 100 miles.
get ready to bail out.
no...but seriously, just take it to an auto parts store, they should scan it for you for free.
