Default High RPMs on Start Up?

Hi everyone, I just purchased a FM tC on Saturday and it is my first standard transmission. I'm doing alright with the shifting, but my question relates to starting. When I start the car up the rpms stay in the 2k range for a few seconds and then settle down to around 1k. At the dealer it started normally and the rpms were around 6-7 hundred. Is it normal for the engine to run that high when starting the car in the morning. It's about 48-50 degrees here right now.

its perfectly normal for ANY toyota engine during a cold start. The one at the dealer was probably already warmed up....

Thanks guys for the input. I know that usually most cars rev higher during cold starts, but I wasn't sure if 2200rpm was too high. Really thanks a lot for the info. I love the car so far btw :D

that initial higher rev is standard for most cars, if not all. its there so that the engine can warm up faster. if you had an automatic, you'll also notice that it shifts slower and stays in a higher engine RPM range. its all so that the car warms up faster.

yeah, the rpm is pretty high at startup. also, don't be alarmed if for no reason, the rpm jumps around when your waiting for it to warm up, it just does that
