Default Hmm. Brake Pads?

Do manufacturers put a cellophane-ish covering over the actual brake pads when they come out of the factory?

My mom had some installed on her car and you can smell the brake burning on one wheel, my theory is that the guy who installed the pads forgot to take off some plastic coating or something? o.O

Anyone know why there is a burning smell?

Thanks,
Mike

I would check to see if the wheel were you are smelling the burning at is hotter than the others. After she drives around for awhile and the burning smell is present, just feel the wheels with your hand. If it is dragging it will be quite hot compared to the others. If this is the case, she will need to get it looked at.

NO they don't, and it may smell because pad might be touching disk for some reason

OK....the way that I understand it....(explained by the family mechanic)....

When brake pads are shipped from the factory a coating is applied (not think like cellophane but a spray coating) so the oils from your hands don't damage the braking surface while installing them.

The smell is coming from this coating that was applied. I thought the same thing when I had new pads put in my old truck when I was 16, but I was assured that the smell would go away the brakes just needed to burn off the coating.

Now, if it never stops smelling. You can be concerned and I would have the mechanic that installed them make sure everything is ok.

The wheel was not hotter than any others.

@ silversciontc, ah a spray coating, that makes sense, did he say how long the smell takes to go away?

Depends on how much you drive the car....

But the smell should go away within a week....unless you stop really hard and then they will smell, but that is just you burning the pads.....
