Just an update. I took everyones advice with the waiting in neutral and got it down now.

So here's my new or shall is say persistent problem. UPHILLS! I live in Washington State so we got moderately inclined hill everywhere. Its drives me nutts when I'm going up hill on a four-way stop and its really fast stop and go. I want to use the e-brake technique but I can't really do that fast... or can I?

Is it pretty much a safety thing to always use e-brake? even on smaller grade hills? Pretty much I'm asking... should I get really good at the e-brake technique? haha

You dont have to do it fast. Just bring the rpms to about 2-half depending how steep the hill is ofcourse. Youll be fine.

I used the e-brake technique on hills during the first 1.5 weeks of driving stick. As soon as I got more comfortable starting the car out from a stop, I just decided to stop using the e-brake all together and just do it.

There were, however, those few times where I was on a steep hill and some jerk@ss was right on top of me... grrr.

I learned on a 94 Nissan pickup truck.. lowered with fat rims on it so it was extra bouncy. It didn't take me too long to learn, I then went onto a 94 celica which was much easier to drive than the Nissan, and now I have my tC. You will pick it up with time, just be patient with yourself and pay attention to when it grabs in the shift of clutch and gas. That sometimes is the biggest problem... not watching/listening/feeling when it happens... Good luck

what I do is loosen the brake a bit when the car behind me is approaching the stop. this allows me to roll back slowly. sends a good message they shouldn't come to a stop close to me.

OP- i've been driving stick for 8 years. I STILL have trouble getting the tc going in 1st (without spinning tires) and occasionally shifting at anything other than WOT.

its not you. its a combination of the tc's throttle and clutch systems and the pedals themselves....or at least the pedal return springs.

you just have to over-rev and then gradually drop the rev as your letting out the clutch slowly. it takes way longer to be able to smoothly fully drop the clutch than it should.

if you sell the car, get a different car with a manual tranny. don't let the tc's crappy problems deter your ability to have fun driving another car.

took me like 2 days to be good enough for highways, about two weeks to be good enough to not ever stall, or have bad shifts, 10 months later, i am still learning.
