Just bought a 2006 tC with 45,972 miles!
Has a NADA Guide value of $10,300 and I only paid $8,500, so I was excited about my findings! I like the car all in all, I live in upstate New York, but it had an Auto Armor treatment so there's no rust. Not long after getting it however, I began to notice the infamous rattle (I've already been researching it). I don't know much about cars, but I seem to have pinpointed it to either the hatch area or the rear moonroof area. I've found posts on here about it, I guess there was an official TSB about it. They all said they took it to the dealership and they eventually got it fixed for them. The problem is, these posts were from 2005-2006. My car is too old for a dealership to just fix for nothing, but I'm hoping that since its 2013 that maybe they have a better idea of how to pinpoint it and fix it. Regardless, I'm hoping it won't be ungodly expensive because I honestly can't afford it seeings as how I now have a car payment for myself! I'm not that good with fixing stuff like this though so I might have to fork over the money to have the dealers fix it. Would Scion Customer Service be of any help? I could live with the rattle but its actually pretty loud If anybody has any advice it would be greatly appreciated, as I feel like this is getting in the way of letting my family and I enjoy the car. Thanks!
I did a hefty bit of research as well as some exploring of the car, I believe that I've trace the source of the rattle down to the bumper stops that go over the screws on the hatch when it closes. I was going to bring it to Autozone and show them the stops, and have them order ones that come on the newer model tC's and install them, and hopefully that will solve the problem!
I don't think newer ones will fit since the 1st gen tC was discontinued in 2010 and the second gen was released in 2011.
It would be interesting if they used the exact same part.
Anyway, the stops are what i was talking about that they adjust, and they don't really seem to wear out in a way that they to need to be replaced, at least mine look normal and I've had my 2006 since Aug 2005. I don't remember anybody actually having to have anything replaced and the default service for the rattles was just to tighted bolts and adjust the stuff in the hatch.
I had the dealer tighten and adjust my hatch and sunroof around 3/4 years ago at 30k mi and by now (~70k) it rattles now but either it isn't bad or you get used to it or the radio drowns anything out.

In what way do they adjust the bumper stops? The reason why I ask is because the dealership I bought the car from doesn't seem to know what the hell they're talking about, so I'm afraid I'll be doing these adjustments myself (which I'm not really comfortable doing but I want to take care of this). I'm actually not sensing any sort of rattle coming from the sunroof, it seems to be all coming from the hatch area. Do they need to be extended somehow?
I think they shift them up a little, or adjust the catch lower, or some may add a foam padding, i don't remember specifically what the dealer does or what other people have tried, either way the dealer fix it isn't permanent.
