Default Is the key/remote waterproof?

I'm still waiting for my tC to come in, but I thought about something yesterday.

I went to the beach on a beautiful southern california day in my corolla. I tied my key to my board shorts like I always do since there was just 2 of us and I wasn't about to leave my keys in my bag with no one to watch my stuff.

But I was wondering, when I get my tC...the keyless entry remote is ON THE KEY! So would that thing be able to take the abuse of me being pounded into the sand along the california coastline? Will my car keys be able to stand the might of the pressure from me crashing into a 6 year old kid after failing to tame a great big 2 foot shore breaking wave?

I doubt it will hold up to very much...cheap car=cheap key.

I do the same thing...

Get the valet key and use it (it doesn't have the keyless entry stuff in it). Since it's just a key you can have it in the water no problem.

(unless the tC doesn't come with a valet key which would be just dumb).

If there is no valet key, then get a key cut and use it only on the door (leave the key with the chip in it in the car, hidden of course).

The valet key is completely sealed. Water should not hurt it.

Hehe, this is really irrelevent to the tc but this thread made me think about it. A few weeks ago my dad told me to look for the second key to my '94 diamante, since I was home for the summer, and he wanted to have it for when my car went to the shop (the keychain has both the key itself and the remote for the doors/alarm on it). So, I found the key, put it in my jeans to give to him, forgot about the key and stuck my jeans in the wash - and dryer When I found the remote thing it had transformed from a square cornered rectangle into a rather beat up oval shaped peice of black plastic (from the dryer I'm guessing), yet the red light still came on when I pressed it. Went out to my car and what do you know - it still works!!!!! So....I'm thinking that if my crummy diamante key can hold up to both a wash and a dryer...the tc should be able to withstand a little water. I'll let someone else find out first though
