Default low tire pressure indicator problem...Help!

About 3 months ago, I had my wheels rotated by a local shop. Soon after, the Low Tire Pressure indicator light came on. I rechecked the pressures and reset the light when the tires cooled off. It worked for about a week and it came back on. Did the same thing and it worked until last week. I reset it and tonight it came back on!

Anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem? I'm at 32k miles so I guess I'm out of warranty, so I'd like to avoid going to the dealer and have them charge me up the ___ for some simple fix if there is one.

hmmm... when that happened to me along time ago.. i rechecked the tire pressures.. and when you reset it.. make sure to hold it until to see all the blinkys go away.. (should be 3 times) some people don't hold it long enough.

basic warranty is 3yr/36k
if sensor was bad, that would be covered

its either a sensor or you may have a nail in the tire
the valve stem could also be leaking too

Could be slow leak, check for nails in your tires. Bell Tire patches for free.

haha i had the same problem when the dealer rotated my tires, all you have to do is reset the senor PROPERLY which means holding the button down while the key is on acc for more than 5 secs and it should start to blink after its done blinking you should be good to go

...and once more, the sensors do NOT detect pressure in any tire, they detect the difference in rotational speed between tires. If a tire's pressure is appreciably lower or higher than the pressure in the others, it will rotate at a different speed.

But yeah, the commonest failure is the failure to do a complete and proper reset.

no one said anything about that, all that was mentioned was the word sensor

Dave, subject of topic: low tire pressure indicator problem...Help!

I'm just trying to get acrosss the way the sensors work so there is some understanding by most people that it is not 'low tire pressure' that sets off the 'tire pressure warning light,' but anything that causes one tire to rotate at a different rate than the others.

Doesn't change the correctness or accuracy of your answer, or the understanding of the question, just trys to assist in the general understanding of what the indicator is indicating for those who don't know.

While there ARE systems that actually monitor tire pressure, this isn't one of 'em.

Enjoy!

Thanks for all the input! I did do the reset correctly, so if it happens again, hopefully it'll happen within the next 4000mi.

Should I do the soapy water trick on the valve stems to see if there is a leak?

Really? you'll hate to wait for it to blink again? i have the same problem now and i suspect a slow leak. i had to reset it like 5 times now and i think the leak is too slow that i cant even notice it. the thing is i have been driving from LA to SF thats why it keeps on sensing the low pressure quicker. So what i do everytime is that, when i get a chance that the car is in a complete stop, i just press that reset button and not even wait for it to blink again. I press the button for about 2-3 secs and wait for the light to go off then i leave it like that...rest assured it lights up again. still lighting, and ver irritating...im planning to get a good tire pressure gage so i can get a more accurate reading. better than those in the gas stations.
