Default Most Gas in Gallons put into your tank at one time?

So my family and I were traveling down to south carolina for vacation this last weekend. I figured this would be a good time to see how many miles I could get off of each tank of gas. I was pushing it really far on one of the tanks on the ride home and all the sudden felt the car kinda sputter a little once, about 5 mins later I pull off to get gas and as I pull into the station it does it twice again. It seems I pushed it a little too far. When I filled up the tank I topped it off to the next dollar and the Gallons showed...... Get ready for this..... 14.455 Gallons. I dont know if that will ever be beaten, but I figured I would share the story of my near stupidity.

I would say it's more than "near" stupidity. Running it that low can damage your fuel pump - so the sputtering is one problem at least, but you could be causing other issues. Just an FYI to probably try not to push it that far if you can help it.

How many miles did you get on that tank though? Were you keeping track?

Yes I do agree with you that it was quite stupid, however it something I never do. I got 435 mi to that tank, which is just under 31 mpg, that wasent even my best for the trip as that was in the hot so the A/C was runnin hard. On the way down it was nice and cool and I got 361 miles and put 10.142 gallons in for a MPG of 35.59. Wish i was getting that all the time.

I run my gas tank usually 50 miles after the gas light turns on and I've never passed 13.1 gallons

Just took a trip and got an average of about 32mpg and never filled up more than 13.4gal. When the light goes on fill up the next chance you get...its that easy.

I have always wondered how much is left when the light turns on, i usually cant put more than 12.5 in the tank when its comes on, maybe a little more if i push it a little....

But how far is safe? Safe without running out of fuel and I dont particularly want to get all the way to 1/10 of a gallon left and my fuel pump frying??

Safe is refilling as soon as possible when the light comes on. It's really not good practice to drive long distances with the gas light on.

I racked up over 420 miles on my tank going from philly to Myrtle. Set the cruise at 75 mph and just went until I almost ran out of gas. I really wanted to see how far I could get on one tank. I filled up and it was about 14 gallons. I was impressed

13.7xx when i started it with that little gas in the car to get to the gas station.. it sounded like my car had the hardest time starting up.. or maybe it was just a cold start.. i didnt really liek the sound of it.. but a full tank helped alot.

I get around 20 on a good tank, I guess you get on the gas a little more than me? It's funny though, the difference one trip up and down the highway will have on the tank- when I go down 10-15 miles to the Varsity for a Scinergy meet and back I'll get about 3 more MPG for the tank.

It might have been slightly under but definitely not 14.5 which is the tank capacity. the worst i did (because i was on a long trip and did not pass a gas station since the light went on) was 14.2 and i was gettin worried about that

You have an automatic right? I can't imagine a stick getting over 35mpg.
