Default Is my Grey Scion Remote Key a master or valet?

Hello....I recently purchased a used 2006 TC and it only came with one key. I called the stealer to ask about a getting a copy made and was told that is $243 for the key plus $109 for cutting and programming.

I picked up a blank key on e-bay for $60 and went to the dealer today to have it cut and programmed.....The service guy ask me if my key was Black or Grey....when I told him it was Grey, he they would have to charge me $280 to re-program my computer because the Grey key is a vallet key and can not be used to program a new key.

I thought I would do a little research before forking over that much cash. So, everything I read states that the Valet key does not have a remote and will not open the glovebox. My Grey key looks identical to the black keys only it's Grey. It has a remote to unlock and lock the doors as well as a panic alarm and it locks and unlocks the glove box.

So, all that being said, is it possible that some of the Scion's came with a Grey master? Just wondering if anyone else may have had Grey master's?

I can post a picture if anyone wants to see what it looks like....

Sorry to be so long for such a simple question.

Thanks, Dan

I actually just had my local dealer make me a set of extra keys. they were 41 a piece and they open everything and start my car. they are the basic toyota key and they just programmed them for my car. they have no key fob so no buttons but they were a cheap alternative. i have a 2010.

no remote = valet key...
but you can get a "master key" made without a remote.

BUT.. the actual master key for the tC has the remote..

again.. 2nd post is spot on...
before 2008, the master keys were grey.
the dealership is stupid... however, they still need to re-program the key to the car anyway..

the question now is... what key did you get that came with the car?? i hope it's a master key.. because they need that to re-program the new key.
if not.. then you're SOL.

Thanks for all the responses.....Just what I figured, the service guy didn't know what he was talking about.....I tried to explain to him that it had the remote....He insisted that if it was Grey it was Valet without even looking at it or asking someone else....I hate that stealership....they are so busy, they just want to move you along and rape the next person....

I will call today and ask to speak to a manager......Wish me luck.

I work at a local ace Hardware and we make chip-keys. No remote on key fob, but it is programmed/cut and functions exactly as your original. We have a lot of business from local dealerships who must have another copy in case of repossession. Been doing this for over 5 years and price has always been $69 for double-cut chipkeys(like on our Scions), and $89 for side-winder cut lexus, honda, mercedes, bmw, volvo, volkswagen that use a different cutting technique and some require the vehicle to be present for programming.

always gets me at how much some places charge for a spare key. Employee discount makes it $37.

Thanks Joe....That's good to know.

I will check with my local Ace in Rancho and see if they do the same.
